DRIVING IN THE RAIN TIPS

Rain and wet roads can reduce vehicle traction and affect your ability to stop and accelerate. Always drive slower in rainy weather than you would in safe driving conditions, and try to avoid driving through large puddles and deep standing or flowing water.

If you are looking for a vehicle that handles the road well in all types of weather, please visit our website or call the Ron Westphal Chevrolet Customer Care Team today at 630-898-9630.

WARNING

Wet brakes can cause crashes. They might not work as well in a quick stop and could cause the vehicle to pull to one side, causing you to lose control of the vehicle. After driving through a large puddle of water or a car wash, lightly apply the brake pedal until the brakes work normally.

Flowing or rushing water creates strong forces. Driving through flowing water could cause the vehicle to be carried away. If this happens, you and other vehicle occupants could drown. Do not ignore police warnings and be very cautious about trying to drive through flowing water.

HYDROPLANING

Hydroplaning is dangerous and can seriously impede driving safety. When the vehicle is hydroplaning, it has little or no contact with the road. Water can build up under the vehicle’s tires so they actually ride on the water. This can happen if the road is wet and you are going too fast. There is no hard-and-fast rule for dealing with hydroplaning. The best advice is to slow down when the road is wet.

General Tips for Driving in the Rain

Besides slowing down, other wet-weather driving tips include:

  • Allow extra following distance
  • Pass with caution
  • Keep windshield wipers in good shape
  • Keep the windshield washer fluid reservoir filled
  • Have good tires with proper tread depth
  • Turn off cruise control

Last-Ever Chevrolet Impala Bought By 93-Year-Old Michigan Man

Back in February, GM Authority reported that the final Chevrolet Impala to be produced had rolled off the assembly line at General Motors’ Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant in Michigan. This wasn’t just the last of the current-generation Chevrolet Impala, but very likely the last Impala ever, with GM turning its back on sedans in favor of crossovers, SUVs and pickup trucks.

Last-Ever Chevrolet Impala

Now, we’re happy to report that the last-ever Chevrolet Impala, a Cajun Red example, has found a home after it was purchased by 93-year-old Chevrolet enthusiast Pinky Randall. The Houghton Lake, Michigan resident is a lifelong Chevy fan and has maintained a collection of Bow Tie-badged vehicles throughout the years.

Randall knew GM had planned to discontinue the Chevrolet Impala, so he went into Classic Chevrolet in Lake City, Michigan to inquire about purchasing it. “I ordered it a year ago, he told local news publication The Houghton Lake Restorer. He and his wife Joyce later drove the car back from Lake City to Houghton Lake, which is about 30 minutes away.

“By golly, the car made it alright,” he said after arriving home. “It handles nice. I like it.”

Back in 1996, Randall purchased the last 1996 Impala SS produced and was invited by Chevrolet to personally drive the vehicle off the line, something he described to The Houghton Lake Restorer as a “real honor.” He added the Dark Cherry Metallic performance sedan to his collection, which included six other Chevys at the time, but eventually sold it back to GM.

Based on the photos, Randall’s Chevrolet Impala appears to be a handsomely equipped LTZ trim model. He also has it outfitted with a custom front license plate reading “Mr. Chev” while his actual rear plate, which features his WWII veteran designation, reads “FINAL1.”

Chevrolet is estimated to have built 18,386 units of the Chevrolet Impala for the 2020 model year.

Thanks for reading about Last-Ever Chevrolet Impala.

Summer Driving Tips:

SUMMER DRIVING TIPS

Higher temperatures mean extra work for your vehicle. The Certified Service experts encourage you to follow these simple steps to make sure your vehicle is up to the challenges of summer:

Do NOT leave your pet in your vehicle unattended for ANY length of time, period.  The inside of your vehicle can heat up to unbearable temperatures in minutes-killing your pet.  Even if you think you are just going to run into a store and only be gone 5 minutes…you never know what could happen that might delay you.  Just don’t leave your pet unattended EVER.

  • Check tire tread depth for excessive and uneven wear.
  • In extreme summer temperatures, you may have to change the grade of your engine oil. Check your Owner’s Manual for the viscosity grade recommended for your vehicle’s engine.
  • Check the cooling system – both hoses and radiator – for leaks. Check the coolant recovery reservoir under the hood when the engine is cold. Add the coolant recommended in your Owner’s Manual, if required. Or replace coolant according to your maintenance schedule in your Owner’s Manual.

Learn what maintenance items are crucial before heading off on a spring or summer road trip with your vehicle.

General Summer Tips

  • Never leave children or pets alone inside a vehicle.
    – On a typical summer day, the temperature inside a vehicle can reach potentially deadly levels within minutes – even with a window open.
    – Heat is much more dangerous to children and pets. When left in a hot vehicle, their core body temperature can rise significantly faster than that of an adult. This could cause
    permanent injury or even death.
  • Check the cooling system. Look for leaks, worn or bulging hoses, and malfunctioning fan operation. The hot days of summer strain the cooling system, and a failure can leave
you stranded with an overheated engine.
  • Caught in a traffic jam? Leave plenty of room between you and the vehicle ahead of you so the radiator can do its job. If the engine overheats, turn off the air conditioner and turn
on the heater. You may be uncomfortable, but the heater acts like a second radiator and can help cool the engine.

New Pictures Show 2021 Suburban Z71 For The Very First Time: Photo Gallery

Shop for a new Suburban NOW!  When General Motors revealed the 2021 Chevrolet Suburban and 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe in a joint debut late last year in Detroit, it showed the all-new full-size SUVs in four models – the Tahoe RST and Z71, as well as the Suburban Premier and High Country. A few weeks later, we spied the Suburban RST roaming the streets, but we have never seen the 2021 Suburban Z71 – until now.

2021 Suburban questions?  Call us now at 630-898-9630.  Before we get into the details, it’s worth noting that the all-new, completely-overhauled Tahoe and Suburban are available in six trim levels, LS, LT, RST, Z71, Premier and High Country. Of those, the Z71 is the offroad-oriented trim level that brings unique looks and increased capability to the extended-length, full-size SUV.

Suburban Commercial / Fleet LS LT RST Z71 Premier High Country

Real-world photos of the extended-length bruiser.

Based on the popular mid-range LT trim level, the 2021 Suburban Z71 features various unique visual and performance attributes. It all starts with the rugged front fascia unique to the Z71 model. Additionally, the fascia also delivers a higher approach angle to aid off-road capability. A set of 20-inch wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires is standard, as are a front skid plate, red tow hooks, and black and black-chrome exterior accents.Under the hood, the 2021 Suburban Z71 can be had with one and only engine – the naturally aspirated 5.3L L84 V8gasoline unit. Output is rated at 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. The GM 10-speed automatic transmission is standard. The more powerful, naturally-aspirated 6.2L L87 V8 is not available, and neither is the 3.0L I6 LM2 turbo-diesel Duramax engine. While it’s perfectly normal for Chevrolet to reserve the big boy 6.2L for only the highest trim levels, but the reason the diesel isn’t available is that it doesn’t fit with the Z71’s front fascia. 4WD with a two-speed transfer case and Hill Descent Control is standard on the new Suburban Z71.

The 2021 Suburban Z71 comes standard with the Premium Smooth Ride suspension, which is a fixed system with passive dampers. Meanwhile, the Air Ride Adaptive Suspension is optional, delivering automatic load-leveling and ride-height adjustment, allowing up to 4 inches (101 mm) of vertical adjustment. In highway driving, the system automatically lowers the ride height ¾-inch (19 mm) to improve aerodynamics and fuel efficiency, while a driver-selectable setting lowers the suspension two inches (51 mm) to aid passenger entry and exit when the vehicle is parked.

Buyers of the Chevrolet Suburban Z71 will likely be more interested in the additional ground clearance the system offers when driving off-road. The system is capable of increasing the vehicle’s ride height by one inch (25 mm) at low speeds in 4WD HI, and an additional 1 inch (25 mm) at lower speeds in 4WD LO.

In fact, one could make the argument that the Suburban Z71 is the most interesting of all Suburban models, as it combines the gargantuan proportions of the extended-length SUV body with the unique front fascia and available Air Suspension. The model seen here has the suspension in its normal setting, and it already looks menacing. Increase that ride height a bit, and the utility should look even meaner still.

The 2021 Suburban will go into production shortly at the GM Arlington plant in Texas and the very first units should begin arriving at dealers towards the end of the third quarter of 2020.

Chevrolet Equinox Z71 Rendered

Off-road style in a crossover body.

Shop Equinox on our website NOW!  These days, you can’t turn around without bumping into some new crossover. Automakers are keen to fill the segment with as many entries as possible, all to leverage the seemingly endless demand for vehicles with a crossover body style. Likewise, the off-roader segment has also seen massive growth, and GMC has responded by confirming it will offer a rough-and-ready AT4 variant for every one of its models by 2021 (excluding the Savana van). That includes the GMC Terrain AT4, which got us thinking – why shouldn’t Chevrolet have its own version of the off-road crossover? What about a Chevrolet Equinox Z71?

It’s an interesting idea, so we decided to render up exactly that. Note that there is currently no indication that a production Chevrolet Equinox Z71 is headed down the line – rather, we created this rendering just for fun.

Additionally, it’s possible something like this could alternatively be called the Chevrolet Equinox Activ, with the Activ nomenclature taken from the outdoor-oriented trim level offered by the new Chevrolet Trailblazer, not to mention the Chevrolet Onix Activ and Chevrolet Spin Activ offered in South America.

With that covered, let’s dive right into our Chevrolet Equinox Z71 rendering. Outside, we find the Chevy’s front fascia was tweaked to accommodate an updated lower bumper section that enables a higher approach angle. The lower fascia section includes a black faux skid plate, which wraps up underneath the lower lip. Meanwhile the grille is done in black, and gets a Z71 badge in the corner.

Meanwhile, the profile reveals a slight body lift, with the Chevrolet Equinox Z71 sitting a bit higher over knobby off-road-ready tires. The black cladding now protrudes out from the body in a more prominent fashion.

Viewed from the rear, our Chevrolet Equinox Z71 rendering rocks quad exhaust tips, with two rounded outlets per corner, similar to the 2022 Chevrolet Equinox RS. There’s also prominent black badging added front to back.

It’s worth noting that while there are currently no known plans to produce a Chevrolet Equinox Z71 model, Ford is going full bore in this segment with the upcoming Ford Bronco Sport. Perhaps a competing model from GM is worth considering after all?

Chevrolet Sonic Beats Every Vehicle To Top J.D. Power Initial Quality Study

Not a bad showing from the unassuming and oft-forgotten Sonic.

J.D. Power released the results of its annual Initial Quality Study this week, which ranks vehicles based on the number of reported problems experienced in the first 90 days of ownership.

Shop for your Sonic on our website now!  General Motors fared well in the 2020 Initial Quality Study, with many of its brands performing above average. In addition, a GM vehicle also performed better in the study than any other vehicle currently on sale, though it wasn’t one of GM’s more popular models like the Chevrolet Silverado or Tahoe, but rather the unassuming Chevrolet Soniccompact.

Chevrolet Sonic owners reported just 103 problems per 100 vehicles in the 2020 Initial Quality Study, making it not only the best non-premium compact car for initial quality, but the best vehicle period. The current Chevrolet Sonic has been in production since 2011 (it was introduced for the 2012 model year) so it’s possible that GM has simply ironed all the kinks out of it over the years. Recently introduced vehicles typically fare worse for initial quality, as they may be more prone to experiencing small issues due to their newness.Non-premium vehicles like the Chevrolet Sonic also have an advantage over premium products like the Mercedes-Benz A-Class. Premium products typically have more standard and available technology, making them more prone to tech-related bugs and other issues. The only premium brands that performed better than the industry average in the study were Genesis, Lexus and Cadillac.

Additionally, the Chevrolet Sonic also outperformed the Chevrolet brand, which experienced an average of 141 problems per 100 vehicles. This was enough to place Chevy third in the study among brands behind Dodge and Kia, which tied with 136 problems per 100 vehicles. Rounding the top ten brands were Ram, Genesis, Mitsubishi, BuickGMC, Volkswagen and Hyundai.

Misaligned Fender Could Cause Paint Chips On 2020 Corvette

Panel gaps up front rub owners the wrong way.

The 2020 Corvette looks and drives like a true world-beating performance icon, with neck-snapping specs and head-turning styling from front to back. Unfortunately, there are a few issues popping up that could sour the experience for some, including the news that a misaligned front fender could cause paint chips.

As outlined in a new post at GM Techlink, some 2020 Corvettes exhibit a small paint chip just below the headlamp where the fender panel lines up with the front fascia. The misalignment can occur on one, or both sides of the vehicle.  If you have any questions about your Corvette’s fit and finish please call our service department at 630-898-9630 or make an appointment online for a vehicle inspection.

To fix this issue, the fender and fascia joint fit must be realigned such that the panels are repositioned inboard and downward, which will make the two panels flush and hide the paint chip.

The fix is outlined in Bulletin #20-NA-124, and involves removal of the front tire and wheel, the front wheelhouse liner, and the front wheel opening molding.

As it turns out, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard about panel gap issues on the 2020 Corvette. Back in April, we covered a video posted by the YouTube channel Daily Downshift, which outlined a number of imperfections on a recently acquired mid-engine Chevrolet Corvette, including the panel gap issues covered above. That particular vehicle also had a sizable panel gap near the rear of the vehicle, where the engine cover was also clearly misaligned.

While these issues aren’t the most impactful imperfections we’ve ever seen, they are still undoubtedly troubling for those buyers that spend big money to get their hands on the new 2020 Corvette. Fixing it also doesn’t sound like too big of a job, but still, for those buyers that demand perfection, misaligned panels and panel gaps are definitely quite annoying to see.
