When was the last time you saw a FUBAR car?
FUBAR. I haven’t heard that phrase in years. Remember the movie it came from? Tango and Cash I believe. Wow…how long ago was that? I’ll tell you–it was Dec 22, 1989! Nearly 30 years ago. I don’t remember the whole movie, just bits and pieces. And, I think it would probably be a pretty corny flick by today’s standards. But then, what 1989 movie wouldn’t be? Well, let’s see…there’s The Abyss, Driving Miss Daisy, Born on the Fourth of July and many more. All released in 1989 and not quite so hokey. OK…whatever. I remember I enjoyed the film in 1989 even if I wouldn’t like it so much today. And we did get FUBAR out of the whole thing. That’s gotta be worth something, right?
Actually FUBAR is the third level of disaster. It is an unofficial military term. This phrase did not originate in the movies. It came to be on the battlefields. FUBAR MEANS: ****** Up Beyond All Recognition. And, that’s just not the case with this custom Cavalier. Watch the video. It’s short and interesting.

EPA’s gas mileage ratings drop for some 2017 models
The EPA’s gas mileage ratings for 2017 will make some folks change their minds about which vehicle to purchase.
New-car shoppers will see mileage numbers on the window stickers of many 2017 model-year cars that are lower than their 2016 predecessors, even though the cars have no mechanical or aerodynamic differences. It’s due to a change in the way that the Environmental Protection Agency calculates window-sticker gas mileage in an effort to better reflect real-world mileage, according to the agency and automakers.
The change could meaningfully affect EPA ratings on nearly 30% of all new cars, a Cars.com analysis of 2017 model-year EPA data indicates.
The analysis looked at the top 75 best-selling vehicles through July with no mechanical or aerodynamic changes. Out of that group, there were 84 variations of individual vehicles (the V-6 versus the four-cylinder, for example). Twenty-three of those, or 27.4%, received a lower EPA highway and city combined driving mileage rating for the 2017 model year.
The revisions could cause consumers to change their minds about models. Bill Meyer, a Kansas City attorney, saw that the 2017 Volkswagen Passat that he has been eyeing fell 4 miles per gallon, from 38 mpg to 34 mpg, in its EPA highway mileage rating, and 2 mpg combined.
“When I looked at the window sticker, I thought, ‘Wow, this is taking a big hit,'” Meyer said. “Why is there such a mileage discrepancy? Thirty-four is not nearly as interesting to me as 38. So it’s making me rethink my decision.”

Models seeing the drop of a single mile per gallon in their combined ratings included versions of Honda Accord, Toyota RAV4 and Hyundai Sonata. Versions of the Volkswagen Passat and Toyota Camry Hybrid fell by 2 mpg in combined highway and city driving.
The recalculation means shoppers cannot compare 2017 mileage numbers to their 2016 predecessors, but Cars.com has learned the EPA plans to address this soon with updates to its website that will allow shoppers to compare the new numbers with models as far back as the 2011 model year.
Real-world mileage shouldn’t change for drivers, but the EPA ratings could fall noticeably in the agency’s biggest adjustment since it issued sweeping changes to window-sticker mileage ratings nearly a decade ago.
The analysis turned up more changes than in the EPA’s own checks into gas mileage on 2016 model-year cars. The agency ran 1,209 fuel-economy results from the 2016 model year through the agency’s updated calculations. Just 15% of that group — 186 variations — fell by 1 mpg in combined. Thirteen, or about 1%, increased by 1 mpg. The combined mileage stayed the same for the remaining 84%.
EPA figures are seldom whole numbers, so rounding can mask — or exaggerate — actual changes. Some cars may actually see their values increase, the EPA notes, but the difference is “so small and subtle” that the perceived change could be more the result of rounding.
“Some of those changed because they were 26.4 before and now they’re 26.6 after,” says Byron Bunker, director of the compliance division at the EPA’s Office of Transportation and Air Quality. “When you change these methodologies you’ll move some more for rounding.”
EPA’s gas mileage ratings
When the EPA issued its broad update of fuel-economy ratings back in 2008, it required automakers to go from two testing cycles to five, adding tests for things such as cold-weather operation, higher speeds, faster acceleration and air-conditioning usage. It also tried to reflect other real-world factors such as road conditions and wind.
Still, a lot of automakers stuck with two-cycle testing and applied what’s called a “curve fit” — a mathematical correction that aligns the results from two cycles to a hypothetical five-cycle test. The EPA developed the math from data it gathered from 2002 to 2006.
“The manufacturer can choose to run all five or run just the city-highway [cycles] and just apply the curve fit,” explained Ryan Harty, who manages Honda’s environmental business development office. “Not all labs have that [five-cycle] capability, and I think EPA recognized that.”

Reasons to Lease
Clients that like to drive something new every few years or so generally prefer leasing because it’s so easy.
1: You are guaranteed not to have any negative equity. Try getting out of a 72 month finance contract after two years and you’ll find out about negative equity.
2: When your lease is over you just walk away. No trade-in hassle. There is a $350 disposition fees but that is usually waived if you re-lease or purchase another Chevy.
3: You have no maintenance headaches. Your vehicle is under warranty pretty much the entire time of your lease. And, 4 free oil changes are includes at no additional charge. You could actually lease a new Chevy for 24 months and pay ZERO in maintenance during that time.
4: Clients get to drive something new all the time. It’s kind of like waiting for the latest smartphone. No one wants to wait for the latest and greatest. Why wait for all the newest features when you can get something new every few years?
5: Lease Loyalty. GM often offers additional incentives to those folks that are currently in a GM lease to encourage them to re-lease. Hey, extra rebate money is always good, right?
Parents Worry About Teen Driving More Than Sex
In the month of August this year more than 360,000 teens will become eligible for a restricted driver’s license in most states – and with that, a lot of parents will experience new levels of stress.
Chevrolet recognizes this top concern for parents and, as a result, in addition to its suite of available active and passive safety features, offers Teen Driver Technology on 10 of its 2017 cars, trucks and SUVs. Chevrolet’s Teen Driver includes an industry-first in-vehicle report card that shows how the teen drove and provides a way for parents to discuss best practices.
“I, like many of our employees, am a parent of teenagers, so we personally understand the anxiety of having a teen driver in the house,” said Steve Majoros, director of marketing, Chevrolet Cars and Crossovers. “And while we can’t control a teen’s behavior when they are in a car without a parent, Chevrolet’s Teen Driver Technology can remind them to buckle up and avoid speeding, while our other available active safety features can help to alert them in certain situations when they’re making less-than-perfect driving decisions.”
Teen Driver supports certain safe driving practices by muting the radio or the audio of any paired device when front seat occupants aren’t wearing their safety belts. It also gives audible and visual warnings when the vehicle is traveling faster than preset speeds, and allows parents to limit the maximum volume of the radio.
Additionally, available active safety features are automatically enabled and incapable of being manually disabled when Teen Driver is in use. These features may include:
- Lane Departure Warning
- Lane Keep Assist
- Front and Rear Park Assist
- Side Blind Zone Alert
- Rear Cross Traffic Alert
- Forward Collision Alert
- Forward Automatic Braking
- Rear Automatic Braking
- Front Pedestrian Braking
- Stability Control
- Traction Control
- Daytime Running Lamps/Automatic Light Control
“As a mother of two, it’s extremely important to find solutions that can help young drivers on the road,” said MaryAnn Beebe, Chevrolet safety engineer. “Chevrolet developed this system as a tool that can give teens some additional coaching as they’re gaining experience. Driving on your own is a big milestone for teens, and Teen Driver helps to remind them to practice safe driving. And for parents, it’s easier to give guidance to your teen when you have some information on what they’re doing behind the wheel.”
The Teen Driver in-vehicle report card may keep track of the following, depending on the vehicle:
- Distance driven
- Maximum speed reached
- Overspeed warnings issued
- Stability control events
- Antilock braking events
- Traction control activations
- Wide-open throttle events
- Forward Collision Alerts, if equipped
- Forward Collision Braking events, if equipped
- Tailgating Alerts, if equipped
Teen Driver is a non-subscription-based service that remains with the vehicle permanently and is available on the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV, Camaro, Colorado, Cruze, Malibu, Silverado, Silverado HD, Suburban, Tahoe and Volt. To use the safety technology, a parent must register their teen’s key fob in the vehicle’s system settings.
New for most 2017 models with Teen Driver:
- Maximum speed limiter
- Configurable audio volume limit
- Additional report card information:
- Traction control activations
- Wide-open throttle events
- Tailgating alerts, if equipped

2017 Corvette Grand Sport
2017 Corvette Grand Sport Has Racing Roots
A ‘purist’ model that leverages a half-century legacy of motorsports success
GENEVA – With Corvette Racing in its DNA, the all-new 2017 Corvette Grand Sport is a pure expression of the car’s motorsports-bred pedigree. It was introduced today at the Geneva International Motor Show.
Like the 2015 Le Mans-winning Corvette C7.R GTE Pro race car, the new Grand Sport combines a lightweight architecture, a track-honed aerodynamics package, Michelin tires and a naturally aspirated engine.
The 2017 Corvette Grand Sport offers an estimated 1.05g in cornering capability – and up to 1.2g with the available Z07 package.
Heritage-inspired design cues and exclusive features acknowledge the historic Grand Sport legacy, established in 1963 to take on the world’s best sports cars. Only five were built before a corporate decision suspending direct motorsports involvement ended the project.
“Racing has been part of Corvette’s essence for more than 50 years and that track experience has helped us build better, more capable cars,” said Mark Reuss, executive vice president of Global Product Development and Global Purchasing and Supply Chain. “The global acclaim for the seventh-generation Corvette validates that direct link and the 2017 Grand Sport takes its track-bred technology to a new, exciting threshold.”
The Corvette Grand Sport coupe and convertible go on sale this summer in the U.S. and in the fall in Europe.
VEHICLE HIGHLIGHTS
- Lightweight architecture and track-honed aerodynamics
- An engine offering an estimated 1.05g in cornering capability and up to 1.2g with the available Z07 package
- Coupe and convertible available this summer in U.S. and fall in Europe
- Grand Sport Collector Edition available later in model year
No holding back
Engineers adapted the chassis tuning, upgraded cooling systems, and performance technologies of the Corvette Z06 to give the new Grand Sport capability commensurate with its racing-derived history.
“We didn’t hold back with the new Grand Sport,” said Tadge Juechter, Corvette chief engineer. “For the first time, buyers can equip the Grand Sport with a Z07 performance package – which adds carbon-ceramic brakes, Michelin Sport Cup 2 summer tires, and carbon-fiber aero package that delivers true downforce.”
The result is a potent track car. In fact, the Grand Sport with the Z07 package is less than one second off the track record for the previous-generation Corvette ZR1 on the road course at GM’s Milford Proving Ground.
Content highlights for Grand Sport include:
- Michelin Pilot Super Sport summer tires: 285/30ZR19 (front) and 335/25ZR20 (rear)
- Specific Grand Sport wheel design: 19×10 inches (front) and 20×12 inches (rear)
- Brembo brake system with (355 mm) 14-inch rotors and six-piston calipers in front and (340 mm) 13.4 inch rotors and four-piston calipers in the rear
- Standard magnetic ride control, specific stabilizer bars and unique springs
- Standard electronic limited-slip differential
- LT1 V8 engine rated at (343 kW) 460 hp, with dry-sump oiling system and active exhaust
- Seven-speed manual transmission with active rev match and available eight-speed paddle-shift automatic with specific performance calibration
- Available Z07 package adds carbon ceramic-matrix brakes and Michelin Pilot Sport 2 Cup tires.
In addition to track-focused aero elements, the Grand Sport also features specific front fender inserts, a Z06-style grille and wider rear fenders – a distinctive design package that gives the car a track-ready attitude.
Grand Sport models are offered with the Stingray’s full exterior and interior color palette. An available Heritage package includes hash-mark fender graphics in six colors, with the hash-mark detail carried onto the interior’s brushed aluminum trim. Full-length stripes are also offered.
“The choices are almost endless,” said Harlan Charles, Corvette product marketing manager. “The packages take personalization to an unprecedented level, enabling customers to create their own Corvette Grand Sport statement like no other.”
Grand Sport Collector Edition
The Grand Sport Collector Edition features an exclusive Watkins Glen Gray Metallic exterior with Tension Blue hash-mark graphics, satin black full-length stripes, black wheels and a unique Tension Blue full leather and suede-wrapped interior.
The Tension Blue color is a bold, modern take on the hue historically associated with the Grand Sport. Inside, a three-dimensional representation of an original Grand Sport race car is embossed in the headrests and that shape is also used on an instrument panel plaque that carries a unique build sequence number.
The Collector Edition will be offered later in the model year in the U.S. and Europe.

Chevrolet Camaro 1LE performance package
2017 Chevrolet Camaro 1LE performance package V6 Green Westphal Chevrolet video.
When you take the best and make it even better, you elevate performance to a whole new level of excellence. The multi-award-winning sixth-generation Camaro is proving that with two new 1LE performance packages that look to raise the standard for track performance.
Chevrolet will offer two distinct 1LE performance packages: one for the 2017 V8 Camaro SS, and one for 2017 V6 Camaro LT Coupe models equipped with manual transmissions. This marks the first time the iconic package, initially offered on third-generation Camaro models in the 1980s, will be available in a V6 variety. No other competitor offers a V6 track package.
The new 1LE Performance Package looks to build on the legacy of its predecessors while helping Camaro attain even higher benchmarks on the track, said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer.
“The Camaro 1LE packages follow a recipe any track-day enthusiast will appreciate,” said Oppenheiser. “Start with a lightweight, stiff structure and then add higher levels of suspension stiffness and damping, more aggressive tires, higher downforce, more powerful brakes and more cooling. The result delivers better performance in all measures.”
A beautifully balanced daily driver, the V6 Camaro LT 1LE is also a beast on the track. Featuring more aggressive suspension tuning, standard Brembo® brakes, and Goodyear® Eagle F1 tires, the LT 1LE delivers an estimated 0.97 g in cornering grip, offering driver enthusiasts consistent lap after lap performance on the track.
“With a curb weight under 3,500 pounds, excellent front-to-rear weight balance and the precision of the FE3 suspension, the Camaro LT 1LE offers unmatched capability in its class,” said Oppenheiser. “As a result, it offers incredible performance for Camaro V6 customers.”
The V8 Camaro SS 1LE introduces the new FE4 suspension to the sixth-generation Camaro — a performance-oriented chassis system with specific tuning for the magnetic dampers, springs and stabilizer bars. The package includes a new segment-exclusive electronic limited-slip differential. Paired with exclusive Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tires, lateral acceleration will exceed 1 g.
“The 2017 Camaro SS 1LE sets the new benchmark for the segment, lapping the Big Willow track at Willow Springs three seconds faster than the standard Camaro SS,” said Oppenheiser.
The 1LE Performance Package will be available late 2016.
