January Cruze sales down 45 percent

Cruze sales in JanuaryThe new year did not change the shift consumer preference.

LORDSTOWN

The new year did not change the shift in consumer preference.

“This is a global phenomena,” said Charlie Chesbrough, senior economist for Cox Automotive. “Consumers love crossovers and aren’t interested in cars anymore.”

If you are still interested in cars, how about the Chevy Cruze?  It’s awesome and we’ve got an excellent selection at Ron Westphal Chevrolet.  Call our Customer Care Team now to set up your V.I.P. consultation or browse our website anytime.

The Chevrolet Cruze, a compact car built at the General Motors Lordstown Assembly Complex, saw a 45.5 percent drop in sales down to 9,245 from 17,278 sold in January 2017, GM said Thursday.

A hatchback version of the Cruze built in Mexico had 1,433 sales in January 2018, down from 2,671 sales in January 2017.

Cruze production at the Lordstown plant is down today because of an unspecified supplier issue. Production will resume Monday.

General Motors reported a 20 percent year-over-year gain in the crossover segment in January and a 7 percent increase in truck deliveries.

Before advancements in fuel technology, consumers’ concerns over gas prices led them to buy cars.

“There’s really no savings to be had [now],” Chesbrough said.

The road will remain tough for cars, he said.

“I don’t see them coming back anytime soon,” he said.

What also affects Cruze sales is GM’s move to pull back on fleet sales, said Michelle Krebs, executive analyst for Autotrader.

In total, GM sold 198,548 vehicles in January, up more than 1 percent year over year.

Chevrolet crossover sales were up 40 percent. The all-new Equinox and Traverse, and the Trax and Bolt EV, all posted their best-ever January sales, the automaker noted.

While the strength of the economy has benefitted the industry, the expected rise in interest rates will result in higher interest rates on auto loans, Chesbrough said. But the increase in take-home pay from the tax reform should benefit the industry.

“The expectation is that consumers this week will start to see more money in their take-home pay [and] in theory that will be a big plus for the economy because people will have more spending money,” Chesbrough said. “Whether it will be a home run for everybody, we don’t know.”

Ford posted January U.S. sales of 161,143, down 6.6 percent from the previous year.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles US LLC reported January sales of 132,803 vehicles, a 13 percent decrease compared with sales in January 2017.

American Honda Motor Co. Inc. reported January sales of 104,542 Honda and Acura vehicles, a decrease of 1.7 percent.

Toyota Motor North America reported January 2018 sales of 167,056 vehicles, an increase of 16.8 percent.

There were 25 sales days in January 2018 and 24 sales days in January 2017.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500-3500HD Trucks First Look Spy Shots

Spy shots caught the heavy duty 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD testing in the snow as General Motors prepares its high-volume pickup trucks.

Now that General Motors has unveiled its all-new Chevrolet Silverado 1500, it’s time for the heavy-duty trucks.

Spy photographers recently photographed the Silverado 2500-3500HD pickups testing in the snow at GM’s proving grounds in Milford, Mich.

The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD are expected to bring design cues and construction techniques from the new light-duty Silverado into the heavy-duty segment. They will offer increased maximum payload capacity and maximum towing capacity ratings. The 3500HD includes dual rear wheels known as a “dually.”

Don’t want to wait ’til 2020 to get a brand new  or pre-owned Silverado?  Call our Customer Care Team at 630-898-9630 or visit our website 24/7.

The vehicles photographed during testing show a 2500HD and a 3500HD dually, both in four-door Crew Cab configuration, sporting a similar look to their smaller 2019 Silverado Silverado sibling. The silhouette follows the same lines and the high-tech headlights and taillights have comparable LED patterns.

Differences on the 2500HD and 3500HD include an aggressive front grille that appears more vertical than the Silverado 1500. The larger trucks also have wide side mirrors and amber lights mounted to the roof – indicating they are more than 80 inches in width.

silverado 2500hd and 3500hd spy shot front endIt is unclear whether the aerodynamic “air curtains” in the front grille of the Silverado 1500 will carry over to the heavy-duty models. Other features, such as a new stamping technique that allowed GM to carve an extra 6.7 inches of width in the pickup bed, will likely feature on the 2500-3500HD.

Currently, Chevrolet’s heavy-duty trucks offer a 6.0-liter V8 engine with 360 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. There is also a 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel engine with 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque. Both engines are paired to a six-speed automatic transmission. The gasoline engine is largely preferred by commercial fleets, which prioritize overall cost in addition to power and toughness, according to a Chevrolet spokesperson. Personal buyers prefer the turbodiesel engine at a rate of about 85 to 90 percent.

The Silverado 1500-3500 lineup is a sales juggernaut for GM. The automaker sold more than 585,000 of the trucks in 2017, an increase of 1.9 percent compared with 2016, according to industry research firm Autodata Corp. That was good enough to make the Silverado family the second-highest selling vehicle in the U.S. behind only the Ford F-Series trucks.

Silverado sales in January rose by 14.5 percent compared with the same month in 2017. Large pickup trucks are valuable to automakers because they generate higher profit margins than passenger cars. The trucks increasingly offer luxury and advanced technology features that command high prices.

The all-new 2019 Silverado 1500 is expected to reach dealerships in the second half of this year. It is not yet known when the 2020 Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD will publicly debut.

5 key details about the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

2019 chevrolet silverado 1500A power tailgate and new diesel engine highlight the changes for this iconic pickup.

The Chevrolet Silverado is a staple on worksites across the country, but it’s also commonly used as a family vehicle and daily driver. It’s one of the most popular pickups in the country, so when Chevrolet redesigned the Silverado 1500 for the 2019 model year, the automaker had to be careful not to mess with a good thing.

Call our Customer Care Team at 630-898-9630 to test drive a brand new Silverado today.  The new Silverado retains the iconic split-bar grille and two tiers of headlights, but with a sleek new look that represents a fully modern pickup truck. The changes go well beyond skin-deep, too.

Here are five key things to know about the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500:

1. It’s lighter, smarter, and larger.

The new design incorporates aluminum panels, such as the doors, hood, and tailgate, which results in a weight reduction of 450 pounds. Speaking of the tailgate, it is now a power-retracting unit, allowing it to open and close with the push of a button. The power tailgate is standard on the luxurious High Country trim.

The new Silverado features a wide bed floor that creates more bed space overall. Inside, the Silverado features clever compartments in the seat backs, helping to extract usable space from every corner of the truck.

2. It has a new diesel engine.

The new engine is a Duramax 3.0-liter, inline-six diesel, which will provide the torque of a V8 with improved fuel economy.

Chevrolet will continue to offer the 5.3-liter V8 and 6.2-liter V8 engines, which now incorporate “dynamic fuel management” to save fuel. Many modern V8 engines can shut down multiple cylinders to run more efficiently, but it usually means rows or banks of cylinders working in tandem. To conserve fuel, “dynamic fuel management” can shut down or activate any combination of cylinders at any time.

Both the Duramax diesel and the gas V8 engines route power through a new 10-speed automatic transmission. Chevrolet says there will be six engine/transmission options.

3. It’s a high-tech pickup.

The Silverado features multiple USB ports, Bluetooth connectivity, and 4G LTE/Wi-Fi hotspot capability. The Silverado comes standard with a 7-inch color touchscreen and is available with an 8-inch color touchscreen. Both run Chevy’s MyLink, which has a logical layout and large, easy-to-read fonts and icons. MyLink also supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for enhanced connectivity.

Trims for the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado are Work Truck, Custom, Custom Trailboss, LT, RST, LT Trailboss, LTZ, and High Country.

The base Work Truck comes standard with a black grille with massive “CHEVROLET” graphic across the grille and tailgate. It also features blacked-out trim and 17-inch steel wheels.

Next up, the Custom features a body-color paint coordination and available integrated exhaust ports. The LT features chrome-accented bumpers, as well as a chrome-front grille and mirror caps. It also features signature LED daytime running lights. The LT gets the 8-inch color touchscreen standard, and it’s available with leather seating.

The upscale LTZ features plenty of chrome accents and a hockey-stick belt line. It also features power-folding, heated outside mirrors. Inside, leather upholstery comes standard.

The range-topping High Country features its own unique grille design. It also features the power up/down tailgate as standard equipment.

4. The new Trailboss trim is rugged and gorgeous.

The first images of the new Silverado were of the Trail Boss trim, and it made quite an impression. The Trail Boss is based on the LT trim and adds the Z71 Off-Road package, a 2-inch suspension lift, a locking rear differential, Rancho shocks, 18-inch wheels, and off-road tires.

5. The new RST trim aims toward on-road performance.

Another new trim for 2019 is the Silverado RST. Once again based on the LT, this trim is geared toward on-road performance, and it features full-color matching bumpers and accents. In addition to the monotone look, the RST features LED headlights, fog lights, and taillights. It also features 22-inch wheels with all-season tires.
