Flag Day Facts You Didn’t Know

1. Bernard Cigrand, a small-town Wisconsin teacher, originated the idea for an annual flag day, to be celebrated across the country every June 14, in 1885. That year, he led his school in the first formal observance of the holiday. Cigrand, who later changed careers and practiced dentistry in Illinois, continued to promote his concept and advocate respect for the flag throughout his life.

2. It is widely believed that Betsy Ross, who assisted the Revolutionary War effort by repairing uniforms and sewing tents, made and helped design the first American flag. However, there is no historical evidence that she contributed to Old Glory’s creation. It was not until her grandson William Canby held an 1870 press conference to recount the story that the American public learned of her possible role.

3. The lyrics of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” America’s national anthem since 1931, are taken from a patriotic poem written by Francis Scott Key after he witnessed the Battle of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812. His words were set to the tune of “To Anacreon in Heaven,” a popular British drinking song.

4. In the 1950s, when it seemed certain that Alaska would be admitted to the Union, designers began retooling the American flag to add a 49th star to the existing 48. Meanwhile, a 17-year-old Ohio student named Bob Heft borrowed his mother’s sewing machine, disassembled his family’s 48-star flag and stitched on 50 stars in a proportional pattern. He handed in his creation to his history teacher for a class project, explaining that he expected Hawaii would soon achieve statehood as well.

Heft also sent the flag to his congressman, Walter Moeller, who presented it to President Eisenhower after both new states joined the Union. Eisenhower selected Heft’s design, and on July 4, 1960, the president and the high school student stood together as the 50-star flag was raised for the first time. Heft’s teacher promptly changed his grade from a B- to an A.

5. Unlike setting an intact flag on fire, flying one upside-down is not always intended as an act of protest. According to the Flag Code, it can also be an official distress signal.

6. The Flag Code stipulates that the Stars and Stripes should not be used as apparel, bedding or drapery.

7. The practice of draping coffins in the American flag is not reserved for military veterans and government officials. On the contrary, any burial may incorporate this tradition.

8. Etiquette calls for American flags to be illuminated by sunlight or another light source while on display.9. During the Vietnam War era, some demonstrators burned American flags as an act of protest. The Flag Protection Act of 1968 was enacted in response, making it illegal to burn or otherwise deface the Stars and Stripes. In two landmark decisions 20 years later, the Supreme Court ruled that the government couldn’t curb individuals’ First Amendment rights by prohibiting desecration of the U.S. flag. Respectful burning of damaged flags according to established protocol has always been acceptable.

10. When flags are taken down from their poles, care must be taken to keep them from touching the ground. In fact, the American flag should always be kept aloft, meaning that rugs and carpets featuring the Stars and Stripes are barred by the Flag Code.

11. When the flags of cities, states, localities or groups are flown on the same staff as the American flag, Old Glory should always be at the peak. When flags of two or more nations are displayed, they should be of equivalent size and flown from separate staffs of the same height.

12. The Flag Code strictly prohibits adding an insignia, drawing or other markings to the Stars and Stripes. Some American politicians have been known to defy this regulation by signing copies of the U.S. flag for their supporters.

13. Ever wondered how to correctly fold an American flag? First, enlist a partner and stand facing each other, each holding both corners of one of the rectangle’s shorter sides. Working together, lift the half of the flag that usually hangs on the bottom over the half that contains the blue field of stars. Next, fold the flag lengthwise a second time so that the stars are visible on the outside. Make a triangular fold at the striped end, bringing one corner up to meet the top edge. Continue to fold the flag in this manner until only a triangle of star-studded blue can be seen.

What to do if you can’t find a new vehicle

Can’t find a new vehicle?

What to do if you can’t find a new vehicle?  Here are some tips from Ron Westphal Chevrolet that can help put you behind the wheel of the vehicle you want.

Don’t panic.  There are still options out there that will provide you with dependable transportation.

What to do if you can't find a new car truck or suv
What to do if you can’t find a new car truck or suv?

Unfortunately, the microchip shortage is real.  And, even though vehicle availability will get better in time for the next few months you may have difficulty finding a vehicle to suit your needs.  Below are some tips that may help you find your perfect next ride.

Tips to find a vehicle in 2021

If a new car dealership is sold out of the new models you are looking for, ask to see their demos and service loaners.  Although these vehicles will have some mileage on them, it is usually under 7,500 miles.  And, these vehicles have not been titled so you could get the brand new vehicle incentives that are in effect at the time of delivery.  Demos and loaners are usually current model year vehicles and you may get extra discounts on these units.

Ask your salesperson about inbound vehicles.  They may be able to tell you exactly when a vehicle is coming in and you could purchase it before it even hits the lot.  Not all dealers will sell or hold inbound vehicles but it doesn’t hurt to ask.  GM has changed there rules during the pandemic to allow dealers to lock in incentives on most GM inbound orders.  Most dealer’s websites show some inbound vehicles but NOT all of them!  See your dealer for details or call Ron Westphal Chevrolet at 1-630-898-9630 to receive an updated and complete listing of inbound vehicles.

Ask your dealership to buy a pre-owned vehicle for you.  At Ron Westphal Chevrolet we have online access to vehicle auctions all across the country.  We can purchase a vehicle on your behalf and have it shipped to our dealership.  We purchase all makes and models of cars, trucks, vans, crossovers, and SUVs.  Call our Customer Care Center at 630-898-9630 for details.

Can't find a new Equinox? Try looking for a late-model GM Certified.
Can’t find a new Equinox? Try looking for a late-model GM Certified.

Why not consider pre-owned?  GM Certified vehicles are typically late-model vehicles that can be very nearly new.  All Certified vehicles pass a strict 172 point vehicle inspection performed at the dealership and come with a GM extended warranty at no additional cost to you.  You would be getting a dependable vehicle even if it technically wasn’t brand new.  Why not drive it for a while until new vehicle inventory availability increases.  Then, trade your Certified vehicle in towards the brand new vehicle.   Who knows…you may just fall in love with it and keep it for years to come.

Repair your current vehicle.  If your current GM vehicle is getting to the point where you usually trade it in, you may want to consider keeping it an extra year.  Take it to the dealership or a mechanic you trust and have them give it a thorough going over.  It may be worth it to spend money on maintenance repairs depending on what your vehicle needs.

Worried about higher mileage and breaking down in the future?  If your vehicle passes inspection and is within mileage and year limitations, you can purchase an extended warranty through your dealership.  Do NOT purchase an extended warranty on the phone from ANYONE!  They are a scam.  ONLY your GM dealership sells genuine GM extended warranties that are honored at all GM dealerships.  To inquire about purchasing a GM Extended warranty please call your local dealer or ask for Ron Westphal Chevrolet’s finance manager at 1-630-898-9630.

Why is there an auto chip shortage?

Auto Chip Shortage

The semiconductor auto chip shortage has affected the auto industry in dramatic ways. Obviously, the biggest issue is how many plants are pausing production—and we’re here to let you know which major vehicles have their production currently affected by the chip shortage—but let’s not forget the Peugeot 308. Sure, it’s not available in the U.S., but Stellantis said this week that instead of the digital speedometers the car was going to have, it will now be produced with analog dials as a way to save chips to use in more popular models. Here’s hoping the upside is that these unexpected variants will be quirky collector’s items some day.

Almost every automaker has been affected and forced to adjust production schedule in major ways. The consulting firm AlixPartners, cited by the Washington Post, estimated that the global auto industry will make somewhere between 1.5 million and five million fewer vehicles this year than originally expected. Volkswagen alone is down 100,000 vehicles for 2021, with the situation expected to worsen in the second quarter, and doesn’t expect to be able to make up the difference this year.

Exactly how long this situation will last is up in the air, but it appears like there’s darkness on the horizon. Taiwan, where many semiconductors are made, is suffering through a water shortage because no typhoons hit the island last year (which means aquifers are low) and rainfall for the first three months of 2021 was roughly half of the normal rate. Given this situation and many issues, the South China Morning Post reported this week that the chip shortage could last until 2022.

HOW THE CHIP SHORTAGE GOT STARTED

German business paper Handelsblatt reported on April 26 that the Volkswagen plant in Bratislava, Slovakia, will stop production of SUVs from April 29 through May 7 because of the chip shortage. The plant builds the VW Touareg and Porsche Cayenne (pictured) as well as the Audi Q7 and Q8. Production of smaller Europe-market cars, including the Volkswagen Up, Seat Mii, and Skoda Citigo, will continue.

Chevrolet Camaro, Equinox, Malibu, Traverse; Cadillac XT4/XT5/XT6; GMC Acadia

Over 10,000 workers will have some sort of extended break at a long list of GM plants. Three plants—Spring Hill, Tennessee (which assembles the Cadillac XT5 and XT6 and the GMC Acadia), Delta Township, Michigan (Buick Enclave and Chevrolet Traverse), and Ramos Arizpe in Mexico (Chevrolet Blazer and Equinox) will shut down for one or two weeks. Three other plants—Lansing, Michigan (Cadillac CT4 and CT5, Chevrolet Camaro), Kansas City (Cadillac XT4, Chevrolet Malibu), and Ingersoll, Ontario (Equinox), will have their current shutdowns extended.

Ford F-150, Explorer, Mustang; Lincoln Aviator, Nautilus

FORD

Ford has already been cutting back on production of the popular F-150 and Explorer, but the automaker said this week that it will keep production rates down at some plants for an extra week or two. Ford plants in Chicago, Flat Rock, and Kansas City will continue to be idle until after the week of May 10. These plants, and others, have been idled since mid-April, and the affected model list also includes the Mustang, Edge, and Transit van. Production of the Lincoln Aviator and Nautilus has also been affected.

Hyundai

Hyundai apparently had plenty of chips in its supply to keep production moving in the early part of the year, but the company did say it would have to adjust its production numbers in May as it did in April. Beyond that, the picture becomes murky, a company spokesperson told Reuters in Korea, as do the names of the affected models. Earlier this month, the company’s Asan plant, which makes the Sonata for overseas markets, temporarily stopped production, and its main plant in Ulsan shut down for a week. There is no news about a production halt in the U.S. yet.

Jaguar XE, XF, F-Type; Land Rover Discovery, Range Rover Evoque

LAND ROVER

The U.K.-based automaker will temporarily stop producing Jaguar XE, XF, and F-type vehicles at its Castle Bromwich plant, and Land Rover and Range Rover SUVs at its Halewood factory starting on April 26, Bloomberg reported. The Halewood plant produces the Land Rover Discovery Sport and the Range Rover Evoque (pictured). Production at the company’s Solihull facility, which builds the rest of the Range Rover lineup plus the Land Rover Defender and the Jaguar F-Pace, will not be affected.

Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Durango
2021 jeep grand cherokee trackhawk
JEEP

Stellantis NV’s Jefferson North plant in Detroit will reduce its workers’ schedules in April and May. That means production of the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Dodge Durango SUV will be affected by rotating layoffs through the end of May. The plant usually runs for 20 hours a day with three crews, but two crews will be laid off between April 26 and May 17, while the third crew will be laid off from May 17 to May 31, according to Automotive News.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class, GLC, EQC

MERCEDES-BENZ

Mercedes stopped building the C-class at its Alabama plant last year, but there’s no guarantee that production wouldn’t be affected even if it hadn’t. Daimler said that it will temporarily halt production at two of its plants in Germany, in Bremen and Rastatt, for at least one week. The C-class, the GLC crossover, and the EQC electric CUV are built in Bremen, while the Rastatt plant builds Mercedes’s compact cars.

Mitsubishi

MITSUBISHI

According to Bloomberg, Mitsubishi built around 90,000 vehicles each month in January and February this year, so the news that the company will drop that number by 16,000 in May means around a fifth of the company’s global production will be affected by the chip shortage. Exactly which models will be pausing production is currently unclear, but a Mitsubishi spokesperson confirmed to Car and Driver that the affected models will come from factories in Okazaki and Mizushima, Japan, and Thailand. The Mirage (pictured) is produced in Thailand and elsewhere.

Nissan Altima, Leaf, Maxima, Murano, Rogue

NISSAN

Nissan has not made an official announcement, but sources quoted by Japan Today said it will shut down its Kyushu, Japan, plant temporarily in mid-May. The plant builds the X-Trail SUV (known here as the Rogue), among other models. The same report says one other Japanese plant will shut down for 10 days in May, and two others will cut the night shift for part of May. Already in March, Nissan paused some of its planned production in the U.S. of the Murano plus the Leaf, Maxima, and Rogue in Smyrna, Tennessee, and of the Altima (pictured) in Canton, Mississippi, Automotive News reported.

Subaru Ascent, Impreza, Legacy, Outback

SUBARU

Local Indianapolis news outlet WFYI reported that Subaru’s Lafayette, Indiana, plant shut down during the last two weeks of April, affecting production of 15,000 vehicles. The plant builds the Ascent, Impreza, Legacy, and Outback (pictured).
