Inspect Fluids and Tire Pressure Regularly

Inspect Fluids and Tire Pressure Regularly

Inspect Fluids and Tire Pressure Regularly

You should always pay extra attention to your tires and fluids. The task to check it takes only a few minutes.

All you need to do is open the hood after the engine has cooled down and detach the oil dipstick. Clean it thoroughly and put it back again. Now when you pull it, you will notice the oil stuck to it. This way you will know when to change the engine oil.

While doing this also check your power steering fluid level and also the hoses and belts for any signs of wear. After warming up your car check the transmission fluid level too.  Many of the newer cars feature a sealed transmission system. Ron Westphal Chevrolet’s service department will be happy to assist you with checking your transmission fluid.  You can call us at 630-898-9630 or visit us online 24/7.

Now for your tires, you can check the pressure by using a gauge and ensure that it has the correct pressure for all tires. Conduct this every other week for less wear to your tire.  Many of the newer cars have tire pressure monitors that allow you to check your tire pressure from the comfort of your driver’s seat.    If you need assistance with checking your vehicle’s tire pressure, please visit us at Ron Westphal Chevrolet.  We’ll be happy to help.  Thanks for reading about how to inspect fluids and tire pressure regularly.

Check your Air Filter

Check your Air Filter

Many car problems are due to faulty air filters attached to them and the wear caused by them. Many manufacturers recommend that you should get your filters changed every 12 months or after 12000 miles, whichever comes first.   Ron Westphal Chevrolet’s service department will gladly check your air filter at no charge.  Don’t ignore this maintenance as it will lead to problems in your AC and you are breathing unhealthy air in your car.

Ron Westphal Chevrolet will install most air filters at no charge.  Or, you can install it yourself.   By doing it yourself, you can save the trip to the mechanic and also money. Here is how you can do it yourself:

Check your Air Filter
  • Firstly locate your filter, which is situated in the hood of the car. It is a black rectangular box, which has metal clips inside it. You can see it as soon as you pop the hood. If you don’t find it there, then check the owner’s manual for assistance.
  • After locating it remove the casing and see how the filter is fit inside it. It is important to note the directions of the filter. Make a note of the directions of the filter and remove it.
  • After removing it insert the new filter the same way, the old one was fit in the same direction. You will see that it will be perfectly fit touching the edges.
  • Now close the metal clips after you are done. This way you have changed the air filter.

You can also clean out the debris from your new filter by using compressed air. This will improve the life of the filter and make it last longer.

HERE’S A 2ND CHANCE TO OWN A TRANS AM SE BANDIT EDITION

In 2007, when word got out about the Camaro making its big come back, Pontiac fans were filled with excitement at the possibility that the Trans Am could do the same. Although that hope was crushed in 2009 when GM dropped Pontiac from its lineup – the Poncho nostalgia continued on for many enthusiasts.

Looking for a new Camaro?  Call our Customer Care Team now at 630-898-9630.

Licensing the name and logo from GM, Trans Am Depot picked up where GM left off. The company, along with the help of the Bandit himself, took 77 2015 Chevrolet Camaros and turned them into modern editions of the 77 Trans Am featured in the Movie – T-Tops and all.

Here's A 2nd Chance To Own A Trans Am SE Bandit EditionWhile all of the cars made sold pretty quickly, Restore-A-Muscle Car is offering enthusiasts a second chance at owning one of these masterfully built and highly collectable cars. Number 74 of the 77 built features a 7.4L supercharged engine that produces 840 HP, a 6 speed manual transmission, and suspension and braking systems that are up to the task of handling all that power. Making the ride just as comfortable as it is thrilling, the car features a custom black leather interior and the late Mr. Burt Reynolds autograph and custom Bandit badging.

As seen in the pictures on the site, this car seems to be well taken care of and only has 2,500 miles on the clock. The build is well documented and comes with a certificate of origin and a custom document folder, along with a custom embroidered car cover, bandit driving gloves, and embroidered polo shirt.

Select the right tires for your vehicle

right tires for your vehicle

Selecting the right tires for your vehicle is an important decision. Your safety, as well as driving enjoyment over the next years and thousands of miles will be determined by this decision. The information provided here and the advice/recommendations from the experts at the Ron Westphal Chevrolet will ensure you select tires that match your vehicle.  Please don’t hesitate to check out our online Tire Finder.

You can contact our Service Department at 630-898-9630

How Many Tires Do I Need?

Since tires affect the personality and performance of your vehicle, all four tires should be as identical as possible or handling problems may arise. If your tires don’t match, it is possible that one end of your vehicle won’t respond as quickly or completely as the other, making it more difficult to control.

“Selecting the right tires for your vehicle is an important decision…the experts at Tire Rack will ensure you select tires that match your vehicle…and the way you drive it!”

How many tires?

If your tires have a lot of remaining tread depth, but you need to replace just one that has been damaged by an accident, road hazard or a vandal, you should replace it with a tire that exactly matches the others.  Select a replacement tire of the same brand, line, size and speed rating. While there may be a less expensive tire available, it wouldn’t be a bargain this time because it would be different than the other three tires on your vehicle.

A Pair of Tires?

If two of your tires have a lot of remaining tread depth, but you need to replace the other two because they were damaged or have worn out, you should replace them with a pair of tires that come as close as possible to matching your existing tires. While identical new tires are desirable, others of the same size and type can also provide good results. Only consider selecting new tires that are from the same tire category as your existing tires. New tires should be installed on the rear axle.

While your vehicle is being serviced ask your mechanic why one pair of tires have worn faster than the others. Was it caused by a lack of tire rotation, out-of-spec wheel alignment or loose mechanical parts? Once the problem has been found, it can be corrected before it damages your new tires. Keep in mind that your ultimate goal is that all of your tires always wear out at the same time so they can be replaced as a set.

A Set of Tires?

If all of your tires are wearing out together, you have the greatest flexibility in tire selection. If you were happy with the original tires, simply replace them. If you want longer tread wear, a smoother ride or more handling, there are probably tires that will help you accomplish that. Review the tire category types until you find a category description that describes a tire that fits your needs.

Once you know how many tires you will be replacing, determine size and type by answering the questions below:

What Is the Right Size for My Vehicle?

Buying the correct tire size can get complicated, especially if you decide to upgrade from your vehicle’s Original Equipment size. The expert service team at Ron Westphal Chevrolet is always ready to offer performance and fitment advice.  You can reach our Service Department at 630-898-9630.

A tire’s first requirement is that it must be able to carry the weight of your vehicle. No matter how good a tire you select, if its capabilities are “overworked” just carrying the load, it will have little reserve capacity to help your vehicle respond to a quick emergency. So when you are in the selection process, make certain that your new tire’s size is designed to carry the weight of your vehicle! Don’t under-size.

The other size consideration is overall tire diameter. Since many of the functions of today’s vehicles are highly computerized, maintaining accurate speed data going into the computer assures accurate instructions coming out. And an important part of the speed equation is your tire’s overall tire diameter.

For cars and vans, staying within a 3% diameter change is desirable. Pick-ups and sport utility vehicles (SUVs) are usually engineered to handle up to a 15% oversize tire.  While at first a 3% diameter increase or reduction in tire diameter may sound very limiting, in most cases it allows approximately a 3/4″ diameter change.

Selecting an ‘over size’ tire may affect your vehicle’s speedometer.  Consult with the Ron Westphal Chevrolet Service team first to find out if your speedometer will need to be adjusted.

Do I Need Summer Tires, Winter Tires, All-Season Tires?

Do you drive your car only in sunshine, or also through rain and snow? Do you drive your light truck on the road, off the road, or are you the one responsible for clearing the land to build the roads? To successfully meet each of these driving conditions requires a different type of tire.

Ask yourself these questions to determine which performance category you should choose from:

What Is the Worst Driving Condition I Will Encounter?

If you use more than one set of tires and wheels (for example, summer tires in summer and snow tires in winter), you can select tires that exactly meet your diverse needs. If you use one set of tires for every season, you may get good performance under many conditions, but you will compromise your vehicle’s performance when the conditions are at their worst.

So the important thing to do is to select your tires so that they match the worst driving condition you expect to encounter. When you’re stuck in the snow or in the mud because your tires don’t have the appropriate capabilities, you’ll curse their limited performance in your worst driving condition…and you’ll quickly forget how smooth and quiet they were at other times!

What Are the Typical Driving Conditions I Will Encounter?

If you only drive around your neighborhood and a “long trip” is one that’s just down to the corner convenience mart, almost any tire will do. But if you drive your vehicle on congested city streets and expressways during rush hour you will be better served by more responsive tires. If you drive extensively on the interstates you will want quiet, smooth riding, long wearing tires. Or if you like to drive quickly on twisting roads or through the mountains you will want good handling tires. And if you drive on the track or in autocross events, you will want the best competition tires available.

Balancing the Requirements of Your Driving Conditions

If your worst driving conditions and your typical conditions are similar, one set of tires will be all you need. If you live at the edge of the snowbelt and infrequently get snow you may want to select an all-season tire. If your SUV is used as the family’s station wagon and driven on the road all of the time, overly aggressive light truck tires aren’t for you (unless you really like the “look”).

If your worst driving condition occurs frequently (you drive through snow all winter) and is dissimilar to your typical driving condition (you commute to work on the expressway during the week and spend your weekends at the beach), you may want to consider selecting two sets of tires for your vehicle. Each set will be designed to master the specific conditions without compromising your driving satisfaction at the extremes. While purchasing two sets of tires may appear expensive, the set you’re not using won’t wear while you are using the other set, and combined they’ll provide longer total wear than either set could individually!

How Do I Compare Price Vs. Value?

Why is it that the price of fuel for our vehicle seems relatively inexpensive while the cost of tires seems high? (Of course you already know that the Tire Rack tries to keep your tire costs as low as possible!) If we keep track of our total costs we will find that typical total fuel costs for just 10 to 20 thousand miles of driving actually exceed our tire costs. And believe us, we’ve found that the quality and performance of our tires has a lot more to do with our driving satisfaction than our fuel does.

We think that much of the mis-perception has to do with the fact that we buy fuel one tankful at a time, and don’t really look at its total cost for thousands of miles. Our tires are paid for “up front” and then last for tens of thousands of miles.

When you are selecting new tires and find one that is perfect, although more expensive than another tire that appears to be a close second, consider evaluating your situation by comparing “how much per mile” each tire will cost. If you plan to drive your vehicle another 30,000 miles and are considering the “perfect” tires at $100 each, and the other at $90 each; you may be surprised to find out that the cost of the “perfect” set costs just 1.3 cents per mile…while the close set costs 1.2 cents per mile. Will saving the $40 today make up for not having selected the “perfect” tire that you will be driving on for the next two years?

When Should I Replace My Tires?

Find out if your tires pass the “Penny Test.”

The Law

According to most states’ laws, tires are legally worn out when they have worn down to 2/32″ of remaining tread depth. To help warn drivers that their tires have reached that point, tires sold in North America are required to have molded indicators called “wear bars” across their tread pattern from their outside shoulder to inside shoulder. Wear bars are designed to visually connect the elements of the tire’s tread pattern and warn drivers when their tires no longer meet minimum tread depth requirements.

Common Sense

However, as a tire wears it is important to realize that while its dry traction and handling will improve its ability to perform in rain and snow will diminish. At 2/32″ of remaining tread depth, resistance to hydroplaning in the rain at highway speeds has been significantly reduced and traction in heavy snow has been virtually eliminated.

If rain and wet roads are a concern, you should consider replacing your tires when they reach approximately 4/32″ of remaining tread depth. Since water can’t be compressed, you need enough tread depth to allow it to escape through the tire’s grooves. If the water can’t escape fast enough your vehicle’s tires will be forced to hydroplane (actually float) on top of the water, losing traction.

If snow covered roads are a concern, you should consider replacing your tires when they reach approximately 5/32″ of remaining tread depth to maintain good mobility. The reason that you need more tread depth in snow is because your tires need to compress the snow in their grooves and release it as they roll. If there isn’t enough tread depth, the “bites” of snow your tires can take on each revolution will be so small that your traction will be reduced. Because tread depth is an important element for snow traction, winter tires start with deeper tread depths than standard all-season or summer tires. Some winter tires even have a series of wear bars molded in their tread pattern indicating approximately 6/32″ remaining tread depth.

Joe Girard, world’s best car salesman dies

Joe Girard, right, with his first customer, who is shown here buying another car in 1977, shortly before Girard’s “retirement.”

Joe Girard, an author and speaker famous for his long-standing Guinness Book of World Records title as the world’s best car salesman, died Feb. 28 at age 90 from injuries incurred from a fall in his home.

Girard sustained head trauma after falling backward on the stairs in his home in Grosse Pointe Shores, Mich., the Detroit Free Press first reported. He died in the hospital two days later.

Girard won the annual title as the world’s No. 1 car salesman from 1966 through 1977, and he sold 13,001 vehicles in 15 years at Merollis Chevrolet in suburban Detroit. In 1973, Girard set the record for most cars sold by a salesman in one year: 1,425. In 2001, he was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame.

Sales tactics

Throughout his career, Girard was an eccentric, speaking often of himself in the third person. He refused to talk to co-workers outside of a “Good morning,” and always ate lunch at his desk so he could dedicate every minute to selling. He paid for customer referrals, wined and dined supervisors at big local companies who knew many people and could send them his way.

Girard made sure his customers were his dealership’s priority, too. He often picked up the tab himself if a customer’s vehicle needed a minor repair, and he hosted an annual barbecue at his home for service department members and their families to ensure his customers were treated well. Girard handed out buttons with his personal logo — an apple with a bite taken out, emblazoned with the words “I like you.”

Girard retired from car sales at age 49 are began writing books, including How to Close Every Sale and How to Sell Yourself.

Record keeper?

Girard was fiercely protective of the Guinness title. Last year, a salesman in Dearborn, Mich., claimed to have shattered Girard’s record. Ali Reda, of Les Stanford Chevrolet and Les Stanford Cadillac, said he sold 1,582 vehicles in 2017, a claim supported by General Motors. Reda said he obtained the skills to break the record through reading Girard’s book, How to Sell Anything to Anybody.

Girard sued Reda, “claiming loss of reputation in the community and economic loss, including, but not limited to, loss of book sales, loss of income, loss of opportunities and loss of earning capacity,” according to the lawsuit filed in Wayne County Circuit Court.

Guinness said it would not update the category because of GM’s stake in the game. Without an objective third-party to ascertain the record was broken, Guinness declared Girard the winner by default.

Mid Engined Corvette

If all goes as planned, we’ll be lucky to see the new Corvette by summer.

mid engined corvette spy photoLast week Corvette dealers in the U.S. opened up pre-order forms for the mid-engined Corvette. That means there’s a reason to believe the new C8 could show up sooner than expected – even after delays. But now a new report suggests that there’s a reason the long-awaited ‘Vettes delay in the first place: the platform.

Call Ron Westphal Chevrolet General Sales Manager Joe Fosco at 630-898-9630 to order your Corvette today.

The mid-engined Corvette is Chevy’s first vehicle with a fully “electrical architecture,” notes Hagerty‘s Don Sherman in a new report after speaking with multiple sources. But it won’t be the last. Each vehicle on this electrical architecture moving forward is loaded with more than 100 computer modules, allowing them to communicate on a Computer Area Network, or CAN. Engineers are reportedly still working out the bugs on this advanced new architecture.

a car parked on the side of a road: Mid-Engined Corvette© Motor1.com/Hersteller Mid-Engined Corvette

The second major issue, according to Sherman, is distortion of the aluminum spaceframe. During testing of C8 prototypes with the 900- (671-kilowatt) to 1,000-horsepower (745-kilowatt) V8 equipped, engineers cracked the glass on the rear hatch. The third issue is one with styling; engineers reportedly have to reign in designers in certain regards.

With the C8 Corvette’s debut inching closer, we now have a better idea of price. According to Sherman, the base C8 Corvette, with a 500-hp (372-kW) 6.2-liter V8, should start at around $60,000 to $70,000. The more-powerful models – particularly the rumored 1,000-hp variant – will easily exceed six figures.

No word on exactly when Chevrolet will pull the cover off the new C8 Corvette, but don’t expect it at the New York Auto Show next month – or any auto show, for that matter. Hagerty suggests the new ‘Vette will show up at a standalone event this summer, possibly the National Corvette Museum’s 25th birthday in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Customers deliveries will kick off in 2020.

Chevy Equinox lease

Leasing a Vehicle – is it the best option for you?

For those who have never leased a car, the process can seem confusing and geared more toward business owners, who might deduct the expense, or individuals who simply can’t afford car payments. But in reality, there are benefits to leasing a car regardless of your career or income status.

The Benefits

Perhaps the greatest benefit of leasing a car is the lower out-of-pocket costs when acquiring and maintaining the car. Leases require little or no down payment, and there are lower sales tax charges. Additionally, monthly payments are usually lower, and you get the pleasure of owning a new car every few years.

With a lease, you are essentially renting the car for a fixed amount of time (typically 36 to 48 months). Therefore, you pay only for the use (depreciation) of the car for that period instead of absorbing the full depreciation cost of the vehicle. Leasing a car will never put you in an upside-down position.

Finally, for business owners, leasing a car may offer tax advantages if the vehicle is used for business purposes.

The Drawbacks

By leasing a car, you always have a car payment because you will never actually own the vehicle. So if you don’t like that prospect, leasing is probably not right for you. However, depending on your type of lease, when your lease term is up you may have the option of financing the remaining value of the vehicle, which mean you will own it when you finish making the loan payments.

The mileage restrictions of leasing pose another drawback. If you drive a great deal during the year, purchasing a car may be the better choice.  If you go over your allotted miles, you’ll pay 25 cents for every extra mile, depending on your lease agreement and the type of vehicle involved. This penalty can leave you with a fairly large bill to pay at the end of the lease if you rack up a lot of extra miles.

If you do go over your allotted lease mileage by a substantial amount, you can purchase your leased vehicle and not be on the hook for the overage amount.  Your friendly Ron Westphal Chevrolet product consultant can council you on your best lease-end options.

Chevy Traverse versus GMC Acadia

Chevy Traverse versus GMC Acadia and CadillacThe new Cadillac XT6 is a much-needed addition to the luxury brand’s vehicle lineup. Featuring three rows of seating for either six of seven passengers, depending on the configuration, the “midsize plus” crossover slots above the midsize Cadillac XT5 and below the full-size Escalade. We recently got our hands on XT6 specs, which enables us to take a look at how these mechanically-related crossovers compare in terms of size and dimensions in todays’s installment of the GM Authority Dimensional Comparison.

Platform

Before we get into the nitty gritty, let’s set a baseline to better understand what we’re dealing with here. All of the models that are part of this Dimensional Comparison are based on the GM C1 platform (pronounced “Chi”). However, there are three different versions of the C1 architecture.

The first is the original, short-wheelbase version. This one has a wheelbase of 112.5 inches and underpins the Cadillac XT5 and the second-generation GMC Acadia. The second is the long-wheelbase version with a wheelbase of 120.9 inches. This one underpins the second iterations of the Chevrolet Traverse and Buick Enclave. And that brings us to the third C1 platform variant.

The third version is based on the original, short-wheelbase version of C1, but with a few minor improvements, the most notable of which (on paper) is the addition of 0.2 inches to the wheelbase. It’s this platform that the Cadillac XT6 is based on.

Exterior

The Cadillac XT6 features a longer, more traditional roof line and a longer rear overhang when compared to the XT5. Both of those elements enable the XT6 its two biggest differentiators – a third row and significantly more cargo room.Looking for a new Traverse?  Visit our website 24/7. Chevy Traverse versus GMC Acadia and Cadillac specs
Compared to the XT5, the XT6 is 9.3 inches longer, 2.3 inches wider and 2.9 inches taller, while having a wheelbase that’s 0.2 inches (5 mm) longer. It also has wider front and rear tracks. That story repeats itself when it comes to the GMC Acadia: the XT6 is 5.2 inches longer, 1.9 inches wider, 2.9 inches taller, with a wheelbase that’s 0.2 inches longer. The XT6 has wider tracks – 1.9 inches in the front and 1.7 in the rear. Before you ask, the XT6 does – in fact – have a wider track at the front than at the rear.

Meanwhile, the XT6 is notably smaller than the gargantuan Chevy Traverse in all dimensions. Compared to the Traverse, the XT6 has a wheelbase that’s 8.2 inches shorter, overall length is down 5.5 inches, width is down 1.3 inches, height is down 1.8 inches, and the tracks are down 0.9 and 0.8 inches, respectively.
