Car Bravo not to be confused with Johnny Bravo

GM announced today that it will start a used-vehicle selling website that it’s calling CarBravo, which will leverage its dealer network and the approximately half-million used vehicles they have in stock.
Customers will be able to shop online or at a GM dealership, and either way they can shop for vehicles in stock at dealers across the United States.
GM will use Black Book to arrive at dollar figures and will give “guaranteed online offers” to buy customers’ vehicles even if they don’t buy another one using the website.

UPDATE 1/12/2022: A General Motors spokesperson contacted by Car and Driver confirmed that GM’s policy about leased-vehicle returns “remains in place” for 2022. That policy, which started last summer, states that people at the end of their lease terms with a GM vehicle are not allowed to sell it to a company or buyer outside the GM network but must return it to a GM dealer.

It was probably inevitable: General Motors is responding to the huge uptick in used-vehicle prices and the growing popularity of websites that buy and sell used cars, and it’s starting its own site. GM’s CarBravo website is set to begin doing business this spring, and dealers are being enrolled now, the automaker announced today.

The strength of a GM sales website is in the company’s enormous network of some 4200 dealers. As Automotive News pointed out today, those dealers have 400,000 used vehicles in inventory each year, and GM Financial has another half a million. Carvana, which saw 74 percent growth year over year as of late 2021, said in a report that it sold 111,949 used vehicles to customers in the third quarter.

GM said it will offer CarBravo buyers “standard warranty coverage” and trial subscriptions to OnStar and SiriusXM for some vehicles, without giving details. Of course, the company points out that the buyers are welcome to use GM’s Financial unit and its network of service and maintenance facilities through its dealerships.

It’s interesting to consider that in July 2021, citing the global chip shortage and the desire to support its dealers, GM made it the rule that lease holders could no longer sell their vehicles outside the GM dealership network at the end of the term, which should help to bolster the available inventory on CarBravo. We have reached out to GM to determine whether that policy will continue in the future.

Some dealers will offer at-home test drives and home delivery. Customers will be able to buy completely online, completely through a dealership, or a combination of the two. GM also says it will buy customers’ vehicles, relying on Black Book numbers, with “guaranteed” offers, even if they don’t purchase another vehicle from CarBravo. In that, it sounds similar to Carvana and other websites that buy and sell used cars.

If you want to know if a vehicle has any open recalls on it, finding out the answer is easy. Just get the 17 digit VIN (vehicle identification number) and go to https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls. The government-run website can provide the answers you seek.

Look on the lower left of your car’s windshield for your 17-character Vehicle Identification Number. Your VIN is also located on your car’s registration card, and it may be shown on your insurance card.

GM IS IN THE ELECTRIC PONTOON BOAT BUSINESS

Last November, General Motors announced it had acquired a 25 percent stake in electric boat motor manufacturer Pure Watercraft. This new partnership spawned its first consumer-facing product this week, with the two companies unveiling a new battery-electric pontoon boat at CES 2022 in Las Vegas.

The boat, dubbed the Pure Watercraft Electric Pontoon Boat, is a ten-passenger, 24-foot pontoon watercraft jointly developed by Pure and GM. The boat features a 66 kWh automotive-grade battery pack supplied by GM, along with either single or dual Pure Outboard electric motors. The Pure Outboard motor is rated at 25 kW or 33 horsepower.

Pricing for the entry-level version of the electric pontoon boat ranges from $45,000-$65,000 depending on options, GM says. The top speed for the single motor version is 15 mph, while the dual-motor model maxes out at 23 mph. The GM-supplied battery packs provide enough juice for up 7 hours of boating fun, depending on how the boat is being driven.

This boat can be used in both salt water and fresh water, as there is no impeller and thus no water intake. Pure says “all parts are designed to prevent corrosion,” as well, further enabling operation in saltwater environments. Additionally, Pure says the electric outboard needs “no scheduled maintenance,” and says there is no need to winterize the motor for the offseason.

“Our fully-sealed electric outboard motor means there are no fluids to ever check or fill, no spark plugs, no cooling loop to get clogged and carry invasive species, no gear set rebuilding, and no annual winterization,” the company explains on its website.

Customers can place a pre-order for the Pure Watercraft Electric Pontoon Boat through the boatmaker’s website at this link. Customers are required to put down a $100 fully refundable deposit to secure their place in line.

Drunk driver lands on Chevy Camaro Convertible

A dramatic Christmas Day crash in Brazil between an out-of-control Chevy Chevette and a Chevy Camaro Convertible was captured on a local pizzeria’s security cameras and is now being circulated online.

According to the original uploader of this rather ridiculous clip, which was filmed in Ribeirão das Neves in Brazil’s Minas Gerais state, the driver of the brown Chevy Chevette lost consciousness while they were behind the wheel, causing their foot to depress the gas. The out-of-control vehicle went on to hit five cars before continuing down the street, flying off an embankment and crashing down onto the roof of a red fifth-generation Chevy Camaro Convertible that was traveling on a perpendicular street.

This accident could have very easily been fatal for the Camaro Convertible driver – especially as an impact like this is essentially the worst-case scenario for a soft-top convertible car. Thankfully the driver was only taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, however being hospitalized with serious injuries and having your Chevy Camaro Convertible totalled is not how anyone wants their Christmas Day to end. We wish them a speedy recovery.

The Chevy Chevette driver admitted to the local police he had just previously drunk “two shots of cognac,” before getting behind the wheel that day. We imagine he had quite a bit more than two shots, seeing as he suddenly passed out while he was behind the wheel, but we’re sure the police were able to determine just how drunk he was with a breathalyzer test. The driver of the Chevette was also taken to the hospital, the video description indicates.

2022 GMC Sierra AT4 vs. 2022 Chevy Silverado Trail Boss: Mechanical Differences

The 2022 GMC Sierra AT4 and 2022 Chevy Silverado Trail Boss are similar in a number of ways – both are GM full-size pickups equipped for off-roading adventures, with the GM T1 body-on-frame platform under the skin. However, while these two vehicles do share quite a bit, there are numerous mechanical differences worth pointing out as well. Now, GM Authority is looking into the specific mechanical differences between the 2022 GMC Sierra AT4 and 2022 Chevy Silverado Trail Boss.

From the off, we need to mention that there are two trim levels for the 2022 Chevy Silverado Trail Boss, including the Silverado Custom Trail Boss and the Silverado LT Trail Boss, with certain features offered on one of the trim levels, but not the other.

With that covered, let’s take a closer look at the mechanical differences between the 2022 GMC Sierra AT4 and 2022 Chevy Silverado Trail Boss, starting with the drivetrain. Under the hood, the 2022 GMC Sierra AT4 is equipped as standard with the 3.0L I6 LM2 turbodiesel Duramax, which is rated at 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. By contrast, the Silverado Custom Trail Boss and Silverado LT Trail Boss are both equipped as standard with the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine, rated at 310 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque.

The 3.0L I6 LM2 is optional in the Silverado Trail Boss models, while the L3B is not offered for the GMC Sierra AT4. The other two engines to mention include the naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L84, rated at 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, and offered as optional on the Silverado Trail Boss models, but not the GMC Sierra AT4. Finally, there’s the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine, rated at 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, and offered as an optional upgrade for both GMC Sierra AT4 and Chevy Silverado LT Trail Boss models.

What to look for when buying a used vehicle

GM Certified vehicles have to pass a strict 172 point vehicle inspection. And, because they are guaranteed to be cream-of-the-crop, they automatically come with a GM-backed extended warranty at no extra cost to you. So GM Certified vehicles are kind of a no-brainer. But what if you are looking at something older that doesn’t qualify to be a GM Certified vehicle. (GM certified vehicles must be within 5 years of the current model year and under 75,000 miles.)

What to look for when buying a used vehicle. Did the dealer inspect the vehicle?

You are welcome to request a service history on every used car prior to purchase. We will be able to tell you exactly what we have done to the vehicle since it has been in our possession. In addition, we will provide you with a current auto-check history report. And, of course, you are welcome to take your potential vehicle to a mechanic off-site. (You must be min 25 years old w/full-coverage insurance.) Overnight test drives are also available.

The bottom line is we don’t want to sell you a bad car any more than you want to buy one. Our reputation is on the line so we are going to make sure the vehicle you buy from us is a good one!

What do we do with the vehicles that don’t pass our inspection? Maybe the car’s frame is bent, or the transmission slips sometimes, the air conditioning doesn’t work etc. Well, those cars get wholesaled to other dealers and wholesalers. We won’t sell them here.

Order books for the refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 officially opened today, December 16^th. Meanwhile, General Motors stopped taking order for the pre-refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 Limited on December 9^th. In addition to revised exterior styling highlighted by a new front fascia, the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 also features a brand-new cabin space for LT trim levels and above. Highlights of the new interior include a 13.4-inch diagonal color touchscreen and 12.3-inch diagonal configurable digital instrument cluster, as well as built-in features like Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Play. As for the specs, the refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 is offered with four engine options, starting with the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine, which now produces 20 percent more torque for a maximum of 420 pound-feet. The refreshed Silverado is also offered with the atmospheric 5.3L V8 L84 gasoline engine, as well as the atmospheric 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine and the 3.0L I6 LM2 turbodiesel Duramax.

Providing the underpinnings is the GM T1 platform. The initial units of the refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 are set to arrive in dealers in Q1 of 2022. Production will take place at the GM Silao plant in Mexico and GM Fort Wayne plant in Indiana, as well as the GM Oshawa plant in Canada.
