Chevy Crossover Trailering Guide

Chevy Crossover Trailering Guide

The crossover body style offers a unique combination of features and characteristics, including a car-like demeanor and easy driving behind the wheel, as well as expanded practicality, passenger space, and storage. As such, some customers choose to tow with their crossover. With that in mind, we’re taking a closer look at the towing capacities for the 2022 Chevy crossover model lineup.

If you are looking for a Crossover, call the Ron Westphal Chevrolet Customer Care Team at 630-898-9630.   We are proud to stock both new and used crossover models.  Or, visit us online anytime.

The models covered here include the Chevy Blazer, Chevy Bolt EV and Bolt EUV, Chevy Equinox, Chevy Trailblazer, Chevy Traverse, and Chevy Trax.

The Chevy crossover model with the highest max trailer weight rating is the Chevy Traverse when equipped with the optional Trailering Equipment Package (RPO code V92), which is rated at 5,000 pounds. To note, the Chevy Traverse is equipped with the naturally aspirated 3.6L V6 LFY gasoline engine, rated at 310 horsepower at 6,800 rpm and 266 pound-feet of torque at 2,800 rpm, mated to the GM 9-speed automatic transmission and either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

To note, the V92 Trailering Equipment Package is also available on the Chevy Blazer and Chevy Trailblazer, and includes things like hitch guidance and a heavy-duty cooling system.

The Chevy crossover with the lowest towing capacity rating is the 2022 Chevy Trailblazer with the turbocharged 1.3L I3 L3T gasoline engine as well as the V92 Trailering Provisions and PDE Trailering Packages, rated at 1,000 pounds. The turbocharged 1.3L I3 L3T gasoline engine is rated at 155 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 174 pound-feet of torque at 1,600 rpm.

t’s also worth noting that several of the 2022 Chevy crossover models are not recommended for towing at all, with owner’s manuals explicitly stating “Never tow a trailer with your vehicle. It was not designed or intended to tow a trailer.” The models not recommended for any towing whatsoever include the Chevy Bolt EV, Chevy Bolt EUV, Chevy Trailblazer models without AWD and the Trailering Packages, and the Chevy Trax.

Walter the Cat

Walter the Cat

Chevrolet probably didn’t predict that an adventurous Walter the Cat would somehow overshadow its trucks and SUVs, but it knows a feline star when it sees one. Now Walter the cat is back, making a second appearance alongside the 2022 Chevy Silverado to prove that winter weather needn’t be a problem whether you’ve got all-wheel drive or just four paws.

Click HERE to order your Walter the Cat mug while they last.

If you are looking for a new or used Silverado, visit our Website or call our Customer Care Team at 630-898-9630.

Walter the Cat leads the pack!
Walter the Cat leads the pack!

The commercial – dubbed “Walter in Winter” – aired for the first time in the US over the weekend, and sees Walter braving the snow this time around. As well as going camping, Walter helps rescue a hapless skier from the snow and settles down in an impromptu campsite – powered, of course, from the Silverado itself.

It’s all in the name of pitching the 2022 Silverado’s Trail Boss trim. That takes the standard truck and gives it a two-inch lift over the regular ride height, for increased clearance off-road. It also gets Goodyear Duratrac tires for better traction, plus a two-speed transfer case and the Z71 off-road package. It’s part of a push by automakers to bake in some of the features we’ve seen popularized in third-party modifications, only this time direct from the factory.

Walter the Cate outside in the snowFor Walter fans, it’s another opportunity to see a cat act like a dog. Truck fans, though, may be more intrigued by Chevrolet’s decision to go with a four-cylinder gas engine as standard on the Silverado LT Trail Boss and Silverado Custom Trail Boss. While a V8 is available in the engine line-up, Chevy opted for its punchy turbo-four instead for this off-road-focused pickup.

While it may be smaller than you might expect, the high-output engine is actually good for 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. If you really want more cylinders, Chevrolet will offer both the 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter versions of its V8 as upgrades on both Trail Boss trims. The Duramax 3.0-liter turbo-diesel – known for its plentiful torque and better economy – is also an option.

It’s Walter’s second outing as a Chevy spokescat, having made his debut back in the Summer of 2021. Then, the automaker showed the go-getter feline getting to grips with the 2021 Silverado, as part of its Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games advertising.

The Walter the Cat spot was an instant hit, and has since racked up more than 2.1 million views on YouTube. While the Silverado showed off its Multi-Flex Tailgate – something which has been carried over to the 2022 model year pickup – Walter was more interested in braving the great outdoors. That meant road-trips in the truck, going fishing and swimming, and chasing other kitties up trees, just like a dog might.

Although they may not be the sort of activities you’d associate with cats, the pet in the commercial wasn’t actually the result of CGI, at least for the most part. For the original advert Chevy’s agency, Commonwealth/McCann, used nine identical tabby cats to play the role of Walter, creative lead Gary Pascoe told Muse by Clio. Each furry actor had its own talents to bring to the set, a huge 100,000 acre ranch in Utah.

“Each Walter the cat had a specific unique ability: jumping into a truck, busting through a door, coming out of water,” Pascoe said. “The real cats performed so well, we ended up using very little CGI.”

Walter made a very small reappearance in Chevrolet’s teaser for the Silverado ZR2 in September 2021, though you’d have been forgiven for missing the brief tail sighting while Chris Pratt extolled the virtues of the truck.

For Chevy, the 2022 Silverado is a particularly big deal. Truck sales continue to grow in the US, and it’s an ongoing battle to try to snipe Ford’s best-selling F-150 from the top spot – particularly as the supply chain shortage adds unexpected hurdles to automakers’ production plans. Meanwhile, come 2023, Chevrolet will launch its 2024 Silverado EV, the first all-electric version of the pickup.

It will use the GM Ultium platform for EVs, have around 400 miles of range – model depending – and offer enhanced convenience features like the ability to open up the bed into the cabin for hauling longer items. While the 2022 Silverado Trail Boss will be offered with a bed outlet, useful for powering campsites whether or not you have your cat with you, the 2024 Silverado EV will be sold with a PowerBase charging system, capable of supplying up to 10.2 kW across as many as 10 outlets.

Commercials for the Silverado EV haven’t begun appearing yet, and indeed Chevrolet is only currently taking reservations for the electric truck. Sales are expected to kick off next year, while the new gas-powered Silverado Trail Boss will arrive in dealerships later in 2022. Chevrolet will provide the Multi-Flex Tailgate; you’ll have to supply the adventurous pet.

Next-generation Chevrolet could have airless tires

(CNN)Michelin has been working with General Motors to develop airless tires that will be sold on a next-generation Chevrolet Bolt electric car, expected to go on sale in the next few years, a Michelin executive said. It could mark the decline of over 130 years of tire tradition but also the end of one of the most annoying aspects of car ownership: keeping air in the tires.

“We want to bring the next generation of the Chevrolet Bolt with airless tires,” Alexis Garcin, president of Michelin North America said in an interview with CNN Business, “and it’s going to happen now in the next three to five years.”
GM has not confirmed that it is working on a new car to be called the Chevrolet Bolt, the same name as the automaker’s current EV, but GM has said it is working on a wide variety of electric vehicles including affordable ones similar to the Bolt in price. Michelin and GM have tested the airless tire on current-generation Bolt cars, though, something the companies have been open about.
It’s ironic that the first airless tire for passenger cars might come from the French tire maker whose famous mascot — Bibendum, more popularly known as the Michelin Man — is made from air-filled tires. The company made its name in the late 1800s with advancements to pneumatic (air-filled) tires for bicycles and was among the first to produce and market them for use on automobiles. In 1899, the first car to set a world speed record using pneumatic tires, a rocket-shaped electric car that went 66 miles an hour, did it on Michelins. The company has gone on to produce pneumatic tires used in other speed record attempts by companies like Bugatti.
The disadvantages of filling tires with pressurized air are obvious. Air is a gas that can leak, and tires are vulnerable to punctures. Tire makers have spent over a century coming up with ways to minimize punctures and keep air inside these circular rubber tubes, but it still happens with some regularity.
Michelin’s airless tire design relies on flexible ribs to provide a sort of spring action, roughly the same way air does in a pneumatic tire. If the tread gets punctured, it makes little difference since the tire doesn’t hold in air. In fact, the sides of the airless tire are completely open.
Of course, there are reasons airless tires haven’t been used on passenger cars in over a century. Air does have its advantages. For one thing, pressurized air allows tires to be customized for specific uses. For instance, a driver taking a four-wheel-drive truck off-road might reduce the air pressure in the tires, which allows the tire to flatten out a bit creating a larger footprint area on loose sand or dirt. The tires can then be re-inflated when the truck goes back to driving on asphalt.
Also, car companies have been engineering cars and their suspension systems for a century with the idea that the vehicles would be riding on air-inflated tires. Airless tires could perform differently, presenting a challenge for car engineers.
Michelin is trying to replicate as closely as possible the behavior of air-filled tires. Given the completely different structure of these tires compared to pneumatic ones it will be challenging to replicate that feel, said Ryan Pszczolkowski, who oversees tire testing at Consumer Reports. It’s especially challenging given that pneumatic tires come in a wide variety and feel and behave differently from one another.
“I mean, we’re literally reinventing the wheel here,” he said.
Michelin already sells an airless tire, called the X Tweel, for use on lawnmowers and similar off-road equipment like ATVs. One X Tweel for a lawnmower — it includes the tire and its integrated wheel, rather than the tire and wheel being separate — can cost over $600, according to the product website. But Michelin claims they last longer than pneumatic tires and offer a more comfortable ride because they aren’t as bouncy.
But passenger car drivers are going to be pickier than lawnmower drivers about things like ride, handling, and noise. Cars operate at much higher speeds and take corners much faster than off-road machinery. Michelin engineers have to replicate the feel and performance of pneumatic tires under this more demanding daily use.
For these reasons, the passenger car version Michelin is developing, called the Uptis, has a different construction even though it looks almost the same as the X Tweel. The central ribs that hold it up are made from rubber reinforced with resin-injected fiberglass while the X Tweel’s ribs are made with polyurethane, for instance.
Garcin also envisions the tire incorporating other technological advancements. It will be completely recyclable and renewable — it will easy to retread and reuse — and it will have real-time connectivity so drivers will be able to easily monitor tread wear.
Of course, any consumer acceptance of an airless tire will also depend on the cost. But its introduction on the next generation of Bolt, a car that starts just shy of $32,000, appears to indicate that airless tires won’t be limited to the upper end of the market
Beyond this first electric car, the sheer variety of tire sizes and types already on the market will create its own challenges, said Pszczolkowski, as Michelin works to create airless tires for more vehicles.
“It seems like every time a new vehicle comes out a new tire size is invented,” he said. “It’s really maddening.”
In the end, said Pszczolkowski, the success of airless tires really depends on how much trouble and expense consumers are willing to go to to avoid a flat tire.

Chevy Suburban likely to reach 200,000 miles

Chevy Suburban likely to reach 200,000 miles

A recent study conducted by market research firm iSeeCars indicates the Chevy Suburban is one of the longest-lasting nameplates around, with many examples of the full-size SUV surpassing 200,000 miles driven.

Looking for a new Suburban or Tahoe?  Visit us online or see what we have due in soon by calling our Customer Care Team at 630-898-9630.

Chevy Suburban likely to reach 200,000 miles
Chevy Suburban likely to reach 200,000 miles

iSeeCars based its Top 15 Longest-Lasting Cars ranking on the percentage of registered vehicles of a particular nameplate that have surpassed the 200,000-mile mark. The study found that 6.6 percent of all Chevy Suburban models registered in the U.S. today have 200,00 miles or more – making it the third longest-lasting vehicle, based on this metric. The Toyota Land Cruiser was first, with 18.2 percent of vehicles reaching at least 200,000 miles driven, followed by the Toyota Sequoia at 14.2 percent.

Chevy Suburban likely to reach 200,000 milesNot surprisingly, the GMC Yukon XL, which is essentially a rebadged version of the Suburban, was right behind it in fourth, with 5.5 percent of Yukon XLs hitting 200,000 miles or more. The Chevy Tahoe, of which the Chevy Suburban is an extended wheelbase version, was also among the top ten longest-lasting vehicles at 4.4 percent. The GMC Yukon was twelfth overall at 3.7 percent.

While iSeeCars did not say why fewer GMC Yukon and Yukon XL models hit 200,000 miles than Chevy Suburban and Tahoe models, it could be due to the fact that they are more likely to have added luxury features, which could increase repair costs later in the vehicle’s life span and make it more likely owners will replace the vehicle instead of repairing it. This may also be why the Cadillac Escalade is absent from the top 15.

iSeeCars analyst Karl Brauer was not surprised to see GM’s four full-size SUVs perform well with regard to longevity and reliability.

“All manufactured by General Motors, the Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon, GMC Yukon XL, and Chevrolet Tahoe share a platform and many common parts, confirming why these popular family vehicles are all likely to last 200,000 miles,” said Brauer.
