Chevy’s plug-in hybrid charges faster and receives fresh tech.
If you’re scratching your head while looking at pictures of the 2019 Chevrolet Volt thinking, man, that looks an awful lot like last year’s car, you aren’t going crazy. While some mid-cycle refreshes are mostly limited to design tweaks, Chevy’s 2019 model year update instead focuses on making the Volt an even better plug-in hybrid.
Beneath the skin
Much as I would have liked to see a few visual changes, really, a design update wasn’t essential. The Volt certainly isn’t off-putting, with its Cruze-like front end and silver grille inserts giving it kind of a Transformers vibe.
Packed within the body is a carryover powertrain, comprised of a 1.5-liter I4 gas engine, 18.4-kilowatt-hour battery pack and electric motor, for a combined output of 149 horsepower and 294 pound-feet of torque. The EPA says the 2019 Volt has an all-electric driving range of 53 miles, which bests other PHEVs like the Hyundai Ioniq (29 miles), Kia Niro (26 miles) and Toyota Prius Prime (25 miles). Factor in the gas engine and the Chevy’s driving range grows to 420 miles.
A new 7.2-kW charger is among the more substantial 2019 model year changes, available as a $750 option on the base Volt LT model and standard on my Premier trim tester. It drops 240-volt charging times from 4.5 hours to 2.3. Those planning on powering up on a standard household wall outlet still have to strap in for a 13-hour wait.
For city commuting, the 53 miles of electric range seems very much in reach. The brake regen components replenish the battery along the way, causing electric range to drop slowly. Even more energy recuperation is possible using the on-demand regen steering wheel paddle, though it intervenes sharply enough to make passengers’ heads bob forward when activated. Pedaling around in Normal mode offers a pleasing mix of gallop off the line and thrust to whip past slower traffic, while not decimating battery charge.
What will make electrons disappear at an alarming rate? Sport mode, with its more hyperactive acceleration. Thankfully, a Hold mode can be used to maintain the battery charge on longer stretches of highway cruising, for example, letting the range-extender gas engine do the heavy lifting, saving electricity for your stop-and-go stuff.
Cabin makeover
Heading inside, the biggest news is the updated tech in the center stack with Chevy’s Infotainment 3 system housed in an 8-inch touchscreen. Graphics are crisp with intuitive menus and snappy response times. On my Premier tester, navigation is standard, as is an eight-speaker Bose audio system, Wi-Fi hotspot and both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The Premier’s wireless charge pad is also relocated from under the armrest to a more convenient location at the base of the center stack. Other charge points include two USB ports and a 12-volt outlet up front, while backseat passengers have a 12-volt outlet between the seats.
On the safety front, the backup camera is now a higher-definition unit and a new pedestrian alert system with external speakers emitting a subtle tone at low speeds are standard. Forward collision warning with low-speed automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning with lane-keep assist and rear cross-traffic alert are available as options.
The rest of the Volt’s cabin is unchanged, with a relaxed seating position, adequate room up front and decent legroom in back, though rear headroom leaves a lot to be desired. In the very back there’s a 10.6 cubic feet trunk that will handle weekly grocery trips, but folding down the rear seats enabled me to cram four packs of Owens Corning R-13 insulation into the hatchback.
Veterans can receive complimentary rides in Corvette around the race track.

The Chevrolet Silverado could be heading to the front lines, but not the same one you can buy. At least not yet.
Hydrogen-powered Chevrolet
GM Defense, the new General Motors division focused on military machines, has posted a video to its website that reveals a hydrogen-fueled electric Silverado ZH2 pickup is in the works. Automotive News reports that the video was first presented at the Association of the U.S. Army’s annual meeting in October.
The camouflaged truck appears to be based on the upcoming all-new 2020 Silverado HD, which the automaker has teased with a single image released earlier this year. The two share the same distinctive lighting and grill styling, and the video refers to the Silverado ZH2 as a heavy duty design.
The Silverado ZH2 is essentially a super-size version of the Colorado ZH2 that’s been undergoing tests with the U.S. Army’s Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center since last year, and rides on a set of Multimatic spool valve shocks similar to the ones found on the Colorado ZR2 high performance off-roader.
Instead of a battery pack, the Silverado is equipped with three tanks of hydrogen for a Hydrotec-branded fuel cell that generates electricity and provides stealthy, but powerful performance over a 400-mile range. Along with its quiet operation, the powertrain has a lower heat signature than an internal combustion engine would create and produces drinkable water as its only emission.
The pitch is that military units can convert the expensive JP8 fuel they bring into the field into hydrogen on site, then use it more efficiently in fuel cell vehicles like the ZH2s, which can be refueled in a fraction of the time it would take to charge a battery pack with similar range. GM is also developing a hydrogen-powered fully-autonomous cargo vehicle called the SURUS with military applications in mind.
General Motors hasn’t announced plans for any hydrogen-powered consumer vehicles, but it is collaborating with Honda on fuel cell development and promises to have 20 electric models in its lineup by 2023.

Zero-Percent Financing: Financial Fact or Fiction?
When you hear or see ads touting zero-percent financing, your first reaction may be one of skepticism. How can any finance company offer a car loan with no interest? Yet, zero-percent financing is currently one of the most popular incentives in the automotive industry, and it is offered by the finance arms of major automotive manufacturers.
Just as they offer vehicles with cash rebates, car companies subsidize the finance arms of their corporations, essentially pre-paying the loan interest on specific models. Each company follows the individual formula that works best for it depending upon the cost of the vehicle and the loan term.
The automotive industry on the whole has been on a downward sales trend since before the events of 9/11 and, since that time, zero-percent financing has been offered on more brands than ever.
Does zero-percent financing work? In large part, yes. According to the J.D. Power Dealer Finance Study, it is considered to be one of the most successful motivators to get car buyers into dealerships. Another side of the issue is that while the enticement of zero-percent financing brings many car buyers into the dealerships, those buyers may not necessarily end up with the zero-percent loan — for a variety of reasons, which we’ll explore.
When it comes to zero-percent financing, what is fact and what is fiction?
Zero-percent financing usually requires a shorter-term loan, which can require higher payments.
The most common zero-percent finance deals tend not to extend for as long as the conventional auto loans, so many buyers may opt for the conventional loans in order to keep the monthly payments lower — even though they will end up paying a lot more money in the long term. There are, however, exceptions to this rule, in which zero-percent financing may be offered in longer terms. GM is currently offering 0% x 72 on popular 2018 and 2019 Chevrolet models.
Zero-percent financing requires unblemished credit to qualify.
Not necessarily, as some finance programs are moving to go after an expanded audience of buyers with less than perfect credit scores.
Zero-percent financing is available only on a limited number of models in dealer stock — not on special orders or certain option packages.
Most zero-percent deals tend to apply only to the vehicles on the dealer lot and they may not include special option packages or premium models. GM is currently offering 0% x 72 on popular 2018 and 2019 Chevrolet models.
Zero-percent financing is usually offered in an either/or situation with a cash rebate and you must choose between the two.
Most of the programs typically follow this formula.
If you qualify for zero-percent financing, negotiating a lower price on the vehicle may be more challenging.
Nope, this is not true at Ron Westphal Chevrolet. Our pricing is transparent on our website. Easy Peazy.
Even if you do not qualify for zero-percent financing, excellent interest rates are available.
Check with our finance department. We will be happy to shop for the best interest rate for you.
With all these facts in mind, many people will be attracted to zero-percent financing. Although this trend has been around for a couple of years, most industry experts believe it can’t last forever. With the advent of lower interest rates and flexible terms, today’s car buyers are finding creative financing options at an all-time high. And, with the economic challenges facing many car buyers, these programs will continue to bring buyers into dealerships.
Supposedly only 24 units will be produced, so good luck spotting one in the wild… the 2019 Hennessey Goliath.
It’s not often that we associate a 2019 Chevy Silverado with having six wheels, 800 horsepower, and a $375,000 price tag, but that’s exactly what Hennessey has created with its newest monster: the 2019 Hennessey Goliath 6×6.
Got an extra $375,00 to spare? Call our Customer Care Team at 630-898-9630 and we will be happy to arrange delivery of your Hennessey Goliath Silverado.
The Texan tuning company has managed to build the ultimate off-road variant of the all-new 2019 Chevrolet Silverado Trail Boss Z71, exactly like they did with the Ford F-150 based Hennessey VelociRaptor 6×6. Under the hood, Hennessey worked its magic on the stock 6.2-liter V-8 which pumps out 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque by adding its HPE700 upgrade, which adds a massive 2.9-liter supercharger that produces 7 psi of boost. The end result is a staggering 705 horsepower and 675 pound-feet of torque.
However, folks who aren’t satisfied with the 705-horsepower V-8 will have the option to upgrade to an 808-horsepower stroker motor—and hopefully, that will do the trick.
The Goliath 6×6 is fitted with a host of visual and performance upgrades, most notable of which is the addition of a third axle and an 8-inch suspension lift. Additionally, the Goliath also gets 20-inch wheels wrapped with 37-inch BF Goodrich off-road tires, a custom bed-mounted roll bar with an LED light bar, and new bumpers at the front and back. Additional options include a Brembo brake setup and custom interior features that enable customers to make their Goliath 6×6 truly their own.
Even with the additional weight of the third axle, Hennessey expects that the Goliath will be able to accelerate from zero to 60 somewhere in the four-second range.
The vehicular monstrosity has a starting price of $375,000, but the good news is that the eye-watering price tag also covers the cost of the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado Trail Boss donor truck and comes with a 3-year/36,000 mile warranty. See, it’s not that bad.
If you are currently in the market for a six-wheeled, supercharged pickup truck with up to 808 horsepower, you better act quickly because Hennessey is only planning on building 24 copies and once they’re gone, they’re gone.
We just published a gallery with the fab Fords of the 2018 SEMA Show, but Bow Tie was well-represented as well. Check out our Chevrolet gallery here.
The Chevy booth featured some neat SEMA concepts, with the eCOPO Camaro creating a buzz with its 700-hp all-electric powertrain.
The Mobil1 booth featured a slammed 1956 Chevy Carryall that drew some big crowds. And though it isn’t from the featured marque in this gallery, the Vibrant Performance 1970 Pontiac Trans Am was a sight to see.

GM’s 10-speed automatic finally trickles down to its iconic pony car
2019 Chevrolet Camaro SS First Drive Review: Impressively for a car that was once the provenance of mulleted uncles, the Chevrolet Camaro is still in the midst of its remarkable transformation into one of the best performance deals on the market today. The 2019 model brings about a traditional mid-cycle refresh for the sixth-generation model, both to keep up with the Joneses and further bolster the rest of the Camaro lineup with some key pieces of trickle-down tech from the impressive ZL1 variants at the top. But it’s two notable changes to the venerable Camaro SS in 2019 are particularly worth discussing: the company’s 10-speed automatic transmission, and a new front end that’s piled up a Mount Everest of hot takes since its reveal.
Looking for a hot ride? Visit our website or call our Customer Care Team at 630-898-9630.
I’ll start with the former, since that’s what Chevrolet specifically invited me to sample in the mountains of Malibu—but rest assured, I also bothered the carmaker’s reps about the latter. Chevy brought in Camaro chief engineer Al Oppenheiser to run down some of the updates for 2019, starting by talking about how his team wants a holistic lineup that can offer something for everyone: a chicken in every pot, a Camaro in every garage. To get there, Chevy has done the usual refresh work of trimming weight, upgrading the suspension, and adding tech like a rear mirror camera.
There’s another strategy at play, though. Oppenheiser believes the key to taming the Ford Mustang, which far outpaces Chevy’s sales on the low end of the market, lies in broadening the company’s offerings in a way that will bring down the average transaction price. He pointed to the base LS model, which starts at a cheaper $25,995 and benefits from a lower curb weight, better balance, and a few more standard features. You might cock an eyebrow at this, but the company believes the manual-equipped LS might steal sales from the dwindling world of hot hatches.
But it’s the 2019 Chevrolet Camaro SS that everyone’s talking about—for reasons good and bad. Paired with the reliable LT1 V-8, the 10-speed transmission is a notable addition; co-developed with Ford, it’s one of the few ‘boxes with a double-digit gear count in the passenger car market. Chevy wants it made very clear that it’s made it distinct, however, with unique software, controls, and some cool add-ons that exist purely for fun.
A new function called “Liftfoot Gear Hold” does exactly what it says in Sport and Track modes: holding the gear you’re in when you lift off the throttle to prevent excessive shifting. Shift behavior itself is algorithmic, responding to how you’re driving; the car’s computer can even read data like g-forces to snap off shifts when it knows you’re trying to have a good time. In manual mode, holding the downshift paddle for 1.25 seconds will force the car to drop the maximum amount of gears for a blast of strength right in the middle of the power band.
There are purposeful pops and crackles in the exhaust—Oppenheiser advised keeping it between 3,000 and 5,000 rpm to enjoy the music—and it automatically downshifts to rev the engine when you put it into Sport or Track mode as if to say, “Okay, let’s do this.” Line lock and launch control make triumphant appearances. It’s supposed to “not feel like a Mustang,” Chevy says, and a classic So-Cal loop in a Crush Orange 2019 Chevrolet Camaro SS convertible confirms the modus operandi here.
I drove the Camaro up the Pacific Coast Highway before turning up a freshly-paved Mulholland Highway and giving it the beans, and two things immediately stood out. One, few cars make more sense as a convertible than the mighty ‘Maro. Its bunker-like cabin is markedly improved by removing the roof—doubly so when you’ve got a jewel-like ocean glittering just off the road. And two, the 10-speed is good enough to stand up in a car that most enthusiasts would insist come with a row-your-own manual transmission.
With the slushbox, the engine never felt like it was hunting for any of those 455 horses. At no point did the gear count feel excessive or cumbersome. The ratios are closely spaced in a way that aims to maximize power delivery; more importantly, the algorithmic behavior means the car swaps cogs unobtrusively around town while retaining the racking-a-shotgun shifts you want under heavy acceleration. That learning goes deeper in different performance situations: straight-line speed and technical turns yielded noticeable (and helpful) variances in shift feel.
In general, the 2019 Chevrolet Camaro SS a fun, lively thing, a competent athlete that’s completely comfortable with its semi-pro status. The handling is predictable enough to wring it out with confidence even with its propensity to push through tighter turns. I’ll need to spend more than a couple hours with it to give a final verdict, but the 10-speed transmission is looking like a great addition to a classic badge.

Chevrolet could have scrawled “Fords Suck!” on the windshield in used-car salesman marker, and the legions of Red Sox fans who saw Boston win the World Series would have raised a pint, even if they owned one. Just as pinstripes turn Sox fans to sour grapes, Chevy squares off against the number-one team in pickup-truck sales with nearly the same amount of passion. But on Sunday night, as a company rep gifted a 2019 Chevrolet Silverado LT Trail Boss pickup to Most Valuable Player, Steve Pearce, all that was left on the Dodgers’ field was a red Chevy truck and a man in a red B cap who hit three home runs in the final two games.
If you’re looking for a 2019 Chevy Silverado – we have them in stock now! Call our Customer Care Team at 630-898-9630 today.
Pearce’s prize is the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado LT Trail Boss, which starts at $49,795 with a two-inch lift, a locking rear differential, skid plates, and a trailering package as standard. The traditional car giveaway after major sports championships is a coveted marketing spot in corporate America, even if it goes to a multimillionaire instead of to a superfan who may have spent 10 percent of his or her yearly salary to attend one World Series game. And Chevrolet has had a lock on it as the “Official Vehicle of Major League Baseball” for the past 13 years.
What’s most impressive isn’t the truck, of which there are hundreds of thousands of copies across the country. It’s the man who won it last night. Pearce joined the Sox in June from the Toronto Blue Jays, a trade that broke his two-year contract and was clearly worth every last dollar, after playing with the Tampa Bay Rays for one season. Considering what he has done in four months—help the Red Sox win their fourth World Series in the 21st century, besting the Yankees by three, and becoming only the third first baseman to win the World Series MVP prize—Pearce will probably stay in Massachusetts. Happily, with a new truck.
The Trail Boss model was rolled out onto the field after Steve Pearce and the Red Sox won the series.

The discount brings the price of the pickup truck from $43,620 to $32,620.
Chevrolet began delivering the first units of the all-new 2019 Silverado in August. Production and sales volume of the all-new models are ramping up, but dealers still have quite a few units of the last-generation 2018 model on hand, while also continuing to produce the last-gen K2 Silverado in a single configuration.
Ron Westphal Chevrolet is currently offering select Silverado models with incentives in excess of $12,800. Please call our Customer Care Team at 630-898-9630 or visit our showroom today.
So in what we image is an effort to clear out remaining inventory of the 2018 models, the Bow Tie brand has introduced a rather attractive October 2018 incentive offer for the Silverado 1500.
The Incentive
The nationwide Chevrolet incentive on the 2018 Silverado is $7,250 customer cash plus a $3,000 price reduction and a $750 option package discount when financing with GM Financial.
Based on a $50,940 MSRP, the $11,000 incentive equates to a discount of over 20 percent.
This offer is only applicable to 2018 Silverado Crew Cab models equipped with the All Star Edition package, which adds an additional $2,275 to the truck (before the aforementioned discounts) and includes following features:
Driver 10-way power seat adjuster with bench seat only
Dual-zone climate control
Remote Vehicle Starter system
Rear-window defogger
Manual tilt and telescopic steering column
110-volt power outlet
Shoppers should also note that some customers may not qualify for this offer, and that it is not available with special finance, lease, and some other offers.
