2022 Chevy Silverado

Over the last few weeks, GM Authority has exclusively reported all kinds of juicy details about the refreshed 2022 Silverado 1500. For instance, we told you when order books will open, when production will begin, and that the refreshed truck will be offered in a new configuration. Now, we have another ripe exclusive about the updated truck, this time in the form of GM’s internal timeline for the 2022 Silverado launch cadence:

• November 29^th, 2021 – order guide goes live
• December 2^nd, 2021 – orders open for dealers (quick order tool)
• December 15^th, 2021
  • Online configurator goes live without pricing
  • Pricing goes live for dealers, but might not include all packages and options
• December 16^th, 2021 – first order cycle
• January 5^th, 2022 – online configurator live with pricing
• February 7^th, 2022 – Regular Cab and Crew Cab production beings
• March 6^th, 2022 – Double Cab production begins

As you can see, the excitement for buyers of Chevy‘s full-size light duty pickup truck begin will on Monday November 29^th. That’s when GM will publish the order guide. Shortly thereafter, order books will open for dealers via the quick order tool on December 2^nd. Two weeks after that, on December 15^th, the online configurator will launch, but it will not contain pricing information. Instead, pricing details will be made available to dealers, though these might not include all packages and options. The following day, on December 16^th, GM will conduct the first order cycle for the refreshed 2022 Silverado 1500. The online vehicle configurator will then gain pricing details on January 5^th, 2022.

Production of the Regular Cab and Crew Cab models will begin on February 7^th, 2022. Then Double Cab will begin on March 6^th, 2022.

With those dates in mind, it’s worth noting that GM has pushed back production dates of most of its vehicles as a result of the ongoing global semiconductor microchip shortage, along with other disruptions to the automaker’s supply chain. As such, keep in mind that all of these dates are subject to change.

In the meantime, production of the “stop-gap“, pre-refresh 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 Limited began on October 4^th at the GM Silao plant in Mexico and on October 11^th at the GM Fort Wayne factory in Indiana. However, these Limited (or LTD) models will be discontinued once the refreshed trucks go into production, something GM Authority was also first to report.

As a reminder, the refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 differs substantially from the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 Limited, with the Limited model bridging the gap between the pre-refresh 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 and refreshed 2022 Silverado 1500. The reason for the existence of the Limited model is that the refreshed Silverado 1500 was originally slated to arrive early in the 2022 model year, but was then delayed due to a variety of business complications stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 pickup made its debut on September 9^th, introducing a long list of highly-anticipated changes and updates over the preceding 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 Limited models. Perhaps the biggest change to the refreshed model is a new interior for the fourth-generation Chevy Silverado 1500, which was introduced for the 2019 model year. The new cabin can be found on LT trim, and higher – which includes LT, RST, LT Trail Boss, LTZ, High Country and the new-for-2022 ZR2 models.

The new cockpit now includes a standard 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster plus a 13.4-inch center infotainment touchscreen running a range of Google-powered infotainment features such as Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Play. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility continues to be included.

Making the list of tech options is the GM Super Cruise semi-autonomous driver-assist system. It will be optional on the range-topping Silverado High Country trim. Notably, Super Cruise in the 2022 Chevy Silverado will also offer trailering capabilities. Additionally, Chevy Safety Assist will be standard on all trim levels of the refreshed truck. The suite includes Forward Collision Alert, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Automatic Emergency Braking, Front Pedestrian Braking, Following Distance Indicator, and IntelliBeam auto high beams.

On the outside, the refreshed 2022 Silverado 1500 features a revamped front fascia, including new headlights with animated walk-up and walk-away features along with swiping turn signals on certain trims. Three new exterior colors join the lineup: Dark Ash, Sand Dune, and Glacier Blue Metallic.

The 2022 Silverado 1500 refresh also introduces an updated version of the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine. The boosted four-cylinder, which replaces the deleted 4.3L V6 LV3 engine to become the standard powerplant on the Work Truck, Custom, Custom Trail Boss, LT (LT and 2FL), and RST, now features 20 percent more torque for a total of 420 pound-feet. Additionally, models equipped with the 3.0L I6 LM2 turbodiesel Duramax engine get an increase in towing capacity of up to 13,300 pounds thanks to the newfound availability of the Max Trailering Package (NHT) with the diesel powerplant.

The atmospheric 5.3L V8 L84 and 6.2L V8 L87 remain unchanged, with the 5.3L delivering 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, while the 6.2L putting out 420 horses and 460 pound-feet. Both of these engines feature Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM). Meanwhile, the 5.3L V8 L82 with Active Fuel Management (AFM), previously used on entry-level models, is being deleted from the refresh.

More big news for the refreshed 2022 Silverado is the introduction of the first-ever 2022 Chevy Silverado ZR2 as Chevy’s new flagship off-road offering to slot above the popular Silverado Trail Boss.

The new Silverado ZR2 features a high-approach steel front bumper with removable end caps, which gives the truck a more aggressive exterior appearance and enables a 31.8-degree approach angle. Other off-road-focused equipment includes 18-inch off-road alloy wheels wrapped in 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory tires and additional underbody skid plates.

Mechanically, the new Silverado ZR2 features front and rear e-lockers, a taller ride height, and Multimatic DSSV dampers. Finally, the exit area for the dual exhaust system has been relocated behind the rear wheels, reducing the chance that it will get dented or damaged when off-roading.

The only available engine option in the new Silverado ZR2 will be the aforementioned 6.2L V8 L87 engine mated to the standard GM 10-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive. A new Terrain Mode setting, also standard, allows for one-pedal driving on trails, particularly useful when rock crawling.
