Will there be an electric Camaro?

General Motors is gearing up to release a bevy of new all-electric vehicles, with 30 new EV models set to launch by 2025. Rumor has it one of those new EV’s may be a battery-powered Chevy Camaro, and now, GM President Mark Reuss is adding fuel to the fire with some recent statements.

In an interview with The Fox Garage, Reuss addressed the rumor that GM was working on a new all-electric Chevy Camaro, per a teaser image released last year that appears to show the silhouette of a Chevy Camaro coupe on top of GM’s latest BEV3 EV platform.  Will there be an electric Camaro?

Although Reuss declined to “put a year on that” in terms of a timeframe for the release of an all-electric GM sports car, Reuss did indicate that such a thing was well within reach for the automaker in terms of technology and development, addressing the issue by instead talking about the Cadillac Celestiq, the luxury marque’s upcoming all-electric flagship sedan.

“What we’ve done with those [battery] modules and cells is we’re able to flip those on their sides to get the [hip] point down and to get the roofline down in the car,” Reuss said. “And so that car is a very low-roof car, and that sort of sets up that variant of the Ultium platform.”

“Lots of things being looked at, studied, designed, engineered,” Reuss added. “But I can tell you that the platform is absolutely capable of doing just about everything we want in our portfolio across every segment.”

Although far from specific, the statements certainly leave the possibility of an all-electric sports car (like a Chevy Camaro) wide open.

As GM Authority has covered in the past, the future of the Chevy Camaro nameplate is uncertain, with the current sixth-generation model set to sunset in 2023, or possibly in 2026. Either way, with General Motors aiming for zero tailpipe emissions by 2035, the longterm prospects for the Camaro with internal combustion under the hood is limited, at best.
